Security update?

Very interesting topic and posts....
I received no such message myself as of today/ tonight.
Nevertheless, any message from VM or link to do such a thing WOULD be rediculous to do for rooted user.
let the devs check it out and break it down as mentioned ;))

You can get the update off of VM's website, just go to the OV page and it will be listed on the right side towards the bottom along with a very overdrawn installation guide :p

Just so I understand, if you install this you will lose root. But does that mean it will be impossible to gain root again and return to a custom ROM?

For instance, I am running Bobzhome 2.3.7 ROM. If I install this update, it will remove root, remove custom recovery, remove SU, and return me to a stock 2.2.2 OS. But, would one be able able to use Gingerbreak 1.2 for root, then install SU on the new update, and so on and so forth until my custom ROM is back on the phone? That's the only part of this mess I am not understanding. I get you will lose root, but is it just until you get it back or does this update completely block the use of SU and Gingerbreak?

For now, if you flash it, there is no known method to regain root.

I can make a flasher that will retain root, and upgrade the rom and radio, but that will ruing the ability to overclock, and probably the ability to use any other rom until we get it sorted, this is why i haven't done it.

So is rooting impossible if you flash this update? How will you test roms on your ov leslieann since you flashed the update?!?! :'(
I haven't flashed it, I pulled the rom/update apart and have been going over it.

I don't want to risk my OV because if I trash it, I have no desire to buy another.

I know LeslieAnn said to stop with the conspiracy theories - good advice. I have to mention this though: VMU said they would implement the 2.5GB data cap/throttling starting Mar 23 - a week from today.

Might this update (incl radio) be part of how they mean to implement the throttle?

Just a thought. But the timing is noteworthy.

And please, DON'T start debating that throttle thing again, no matter what you think of it. This thread is too important to be flooded.

Edit: saw the other thread about this where the throttle was already mentioned - although taking the discussion deep into conspiracy terrain. That is NOT my intention. Over & out.

No... There has always been an invisible throttling cap.

Companies learned years ago that putting throttle software in the users hands always ends up with the throttles being disabled.

Well that's a relief leslieann. I thought you flashed that sucker :relieved:

I wonder if the update allows us to track our.data usage:D

The update might make it harder to root. So I'd root now.

I just got the phone and am new to android in general. Was hoping to hold off on rooting and ROMing until after my warranty is up and I am more familiar with what I like/don't like and want/don't want.

Praying LeslieAnn will keep Harmonia up to date with this new patch!

If we can pull anything useful from it, yes Harmonia 1 will get updated to match. It already has parts of the 2.2.2 phones.

I am fairly new to all of this and got the text message about the update. I attempted the update and got an error about the E-signature, and am not stuck at the clockworkmod recovery screen. I was rooted and other than that I am not sure what else you might need to help me. PLEASE HELP!!

Again as mentioned 2 noobs and everyone else there of...DONT FLASH THIS!!!
Nuff said!

I want to try and do a warranty swap on my V since the home button quit working so I flashed this to see if it would get me back to stock. I wiped everything and flashed in recovery and sure enough it returned me to wonderful crappy stock and flashed the new radio image with new prl

Figured I'd mess around a bit with it so tried root with Gingerbreak and it failed. Didn't try any other methods. Was able to enter recovery with the home + volume + power combo and found it didn't overwrite my custom recovery. I did get a couple errors when loading into recovery about not being able to load log files

Wiped everything and reflashed the newest backside and gapps. Everything runs as usual with the new radio image. Tested 3g, SMS, mms and tethering and it all seems to work.

Edit: Was comparing my phone to wife's phone and thought it changed prl but it didn't.

A little late now. I didn't read the forums about the update until there was a problem, which is after the fact.

Good info, thanks! What's the new PRL version number? Could you please pull the PRL, upload and share? Thanks again.

Just out of curiosity, who is getting these notifications to update? I have not received one, and if I hit SW Update under About Phone it says ,"Your system is currently up to date."

Are they targeting older phones, or rooted phones, or...? Can people post their set up i.e. Rooted Y/N, ROM, SW version (if stock), HW Verson, and whether they have received a notification to update?

Rooted: N
Stock 2.2.2
SW Version: VM670ZV5
HW Version: 1.2
No Notification

It didn't change my PRL either. I modded mine for 60683 PRL. I can tether just fine. However accessing the USB as drive option doesn't seem to always want to come up when i plug my USB cord into the phone and computer. Whomever finds a root method for this "security update" i will gladly be the guinea pig. This bloatware and ads are killing my phone.

I am REALLY starting to LOATHE Virgin Mobile right now.

Exactly as I thought.

It is a radio update, not sure if it matches the Optimus S or not though.
I can pull the radio img and make a flasher if anyone wants that, but it may need a different radio driver. Which could break compatibility with all current roms.

It is a full rom, 2.2.2, while not GB, it shows VM may intend to keep this phone around a bit longer. So we may see GB yet. The radio may contain a PRL update but I have no way to check without flashing it.

This WILL remove root.
It may not destroy your phone, and it won't destroy your data, it WILL remove Superuser and the ability to tether. Superuser is easy to replace with a flash, if it doesn't remove the custom recovery, but I can't be certain that it won't destroy that.

Edit:
Yes this destroys recovery as well.
So all root will be lost.

It can simply be repackaged to not lose root, but other than the radio, there is really nothing here for rooted users.
My OV is not rooted. How do I keep the security update but keep my tethering? I'm willing to root if necessary.

Simply put...
You don't.

Look people...
DO NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE.

Not if you like how your phone currently runs. Give the devs time to pull out the bits we can use. If you want to sell your phone or send it back to VM for repair, fine, update it, but if you want to root or tether or anything else, DO NOT UPDATE.

If you update:
You will lose tethering.
You might lose the ability to use any current roms,
You will not be able to root.

All of this will be dealt with in time, but for now, just hold off.
