The correlation is that they're both steps backward. Phones use on-screen buttons to cut costs. There is no other reason to use them.

If it was a cost issue, then why do capacitive buttons dominate in the cheapo/burner phone market? Those things cut costs everywhere they can.

Cap vs On-screen is simply a design choice... I think the difference in cost is negligible either way... expensive phones use cappy buttons, cheap phones are on-screen (and vice versa).

I don't really care about the buttons, honestly.

I've used all 3 (Capacitive, capacitive recents/back + physical home, on-screen) and I don't have a preference. I can get used to either.

If anything, it's typically a design thing. Capacitive buttons free up more room on the UI but also require a decently-sized chin. Adding a physical button also helps as it reduces the chance of accidental presses and also gives a fingerprint reader a place to be, but also takes up some space. On-screen buttons don't require a huge chin and can be customizable, but also require some room in the UI, though many phones can hide said buttons.

That's just in general.

I've noticed that regardless of on-screen buttons, the chin bar on a lot of these are getting bigger.

It's funny, because some phones with capacitive buttons have smaller chin bars.

Right... The small chin argument due to on screen buttons doesn't hold...

Though one benefit of on screen buttons is its easier to have dual front speakers.

Which is funny, because some time ago, some phones with on-screen buttons had pretty small chins. Nowadays, it seems that they've gone bigger.

And yeah, definitely makes it easier to have dual-speakers.

Was hoping LG would go this route with the V20 but it doesn't appear that way based off renders and the actual photo of the device.

Is LG really downgrading the V20's CPU to quad-core after the V10's hexacore? That seems like a step in the wrong direction to me.

Pretty exciting we're only a few days away from hearing more about this phone! This announcement will pretty much determine whether I'll get a Note 7 or go with the V20. I'm hoping LG delivers the goods because I want a worthy successor to the V10!

I have kids, so no glass edges for me lol.

Been seeing quite a few boot loop issues with the G4 (including myself), G5 and V10 but I guess that's what the AT&T device support center is for.

Hopefully the price point isn't ridiculous otherwise I may get a G5.

It's not really a downgrade.

The 820 has 4 less cores, but each core is much more powerful.
