Seriously, when is the Nexus 5 coming?

I can understand why Phil would want that. Earlier I read a article that made it sound like the Nexus 5 would be in fact announced tonight. It's source was a UK site. I went to that site and all they said is Google may surprise us, nothing congrete. No one really knows. I'm still tuning in though. :)
I just like the mystery of it all, makes the day a bit more interesting.

I was able to port my number from Verizon and use it immediately on GoPhone with a new Moto X.

Well buddy, you're in luck. The FCC docs show it's smaller and lighter than the N4 with a larger screen. Impressive! Also, it has many LTE bands and we know it's at least 16GB from Google's posting on Google Play (if you didn't believe the FCC docs...).

LMFAO at the guy who thinks he can get a Moto X and a N7 for the price of a N5. Your (nice enough) "$99" Moto X is really $600. As they say, it's better to keep quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it to everyone!

It is amazing how quick people are to name calling when in an anonymous environment. I am on contract and price never changes, i could make my own phone out of paper clips and staples and the monthly payment would not change. As I have the grandfathered unlimited plan offered with original iphone I will continue to keep my contract too, I will enjoy streaming my monthly uncapped 6-8gb per month. Good luck with your walmart prepaid plans.

I have a full unlimited non-capped plan from the original iphone days, anybody who gives that up for a prepaid plan is crazy. Until At&t takes it away I will keep on buying subsidized phones.

not if they don't exceed 2GB/month. otherwise it's like pissing money away every month. but if that plan works for you then God bless.

My HTC Amaze is dying on me and I'm not gonna spend any money on getting a new battery since the Nexus 5 will be coming out. I'm gonna guess either later this month or November.

I'm holding my fingers AND toes crossed for a Verizon release soooooo soooo dearly. I'm about 45% sure it will come out for verizon or work with verizon but the chance it doesn't, I'm still going to buy and just sell/trade for a moto x. Then I'd be very unhappy :/

Have you ever heard of a little phone called Galaxy Nexus.

They will go down that route inevitably.

I would hope that the Nexus doesn't go to Verizon because they treat like another flagship charging $199 on contract or your have to pay $650 for no contract which totally defeats the purpose of the Nexus philosophy, exactly what they did with the Galaxy Nexus.
Also Verizon is a bunch of asshats for punishing grandfathered customers who want to upgrade making them lose their unlimited data. I bought a 5S full price and my monthly didn't go down at all so I'm leaving them in the dust and either going to port my number to Google Voice and get a Nexus 5 to use on T-Mobile $30 plan or do the same plan and just keep my 5S. Would only go the Google Voice route if Hangouts in 4.4 supports MMS.

Alright, guys. I'm the blogger from Geek.com who started this whole mess. Amusingly enough, I'm also the guy who reported about the Google Play edition phones that started the whole "I'll eat my **** if it's true" thing. ASUS making the next Nexus 10 was also me, for what it's worth. I don't do a lot on Reddit, but you guys have been really funny whenever breaking news happens.

Nothing is happening tonight. There will be no live stream, no press conference, nothing. No one is coming out on stage with a mystery device in their pocket, and no one that I know has been given a N5 or N10 for review yet. For your information, while we do occasionally get those before they are available for sale we do not get them before they are announced.

I didn't break an NDA. The Google Play team didn't think I would react the way I did when I got the invitation, and neglected to include some kind of note asking me not to share it. I caused that team a lot of headaches this past week as a result. It was a communication error, and I jumped the gun. End of story, I promise.

It's been a long month, and we don't have too much longer to wait if what I am hearing is true. I'm sorry I screwed up and got everyone's hopes up, and I'm pissed that I have to apologize because I'm just as excited about this phone as everyone else, but please take my word for it. Nothing is going to happen tonight.

I know, I know. "Why book Capital Cities?"

To be honest, I don't have the answer to that. Big companies hire bands for small events all the time, and usually it really is because reasons. The price was right, the band was available, and that's all she wrote. It happens, and it isn't indicative of anything.

I meant no serious offense! Regardless of the fact that YOUR bottom line doesn't change, you cannot try to compare the price of a subsidized price with an un-subsidized price of a device. The Moto X is over $600. That's a fact and it's foolish to think otherwise.

I went to a Silicon Graphics event in the 90s and the Pointer Sisters performed.

Firstly, you're not uncapped. Att has demonstrated in the past that they are willing to throttle their "unlimited" customers at their own discretion.

Secondly, I personally respect any decision a person wants to make about their own personal finances. If the difference between att and a "wal mart prepaid plan" is worth $1000-$1200 extra over the life of a 24 month contract to you, then certainly you should pay for what is important to you. I think we're just making sure you realize how much money you're really spending for the extra convenience. A lot of otherwise intelligent and technical people don't realize how much it's really costing them as the postpaid pricing structure and subsidies are designed to mislead you.

I think some of the responses to you have been unnecessarily insulting, but I hope that doesn't discourage you from really considering the cheaper alternatives. I can say that I have tried straight talk, net 10, and the t mobile $30 plan over the past year and I truly don't feel like I'm missing out on anything from my att days (I also had a grandfathered unlimited plan before I left for prepaid). And I'm saving at least $350-$500 per year AFTER the cost of purchasing an unlocked nexus. Don't let that grandfathered unlimited plan limit you.

This is what I'm wanting to do, leaving Verizon but I'm still trying to figure out how to do all of it.

Did you port your number to Google Voice and then use a new number for each prepaid option, port your number to each carrier or just get new numbers?

I'm trying to figure out if I should go the GV route or just port my number to each carrier as I try them.

Originally I ported my number to straight talk, but after the first month I decided to just go the gv route. Very glad I did as gv offers lots of its own advantages. Feel free to pm me with questions if you're stuck or confused with any part of the process and I'll be happy to answer.

PS if you're really planning to try out different plans (and you should be), it's really worth going the gv route. Each carrier has its own quirks when it comes to porting and if you screw up you are almost guaranteed to lose your number. I watched a couple slightly impatient family members lose multiple numbers doing this. Porting to gv first eliminates all that risk.

Cool will do!

i would not port your number to GV. too many downsides and not enough upsides -

downsides -
1. GV reliability is not as good as carrier service. GV is stilll flaky IMO.
2. you lose MMS with GV.

upsides -
?

i do use Google Voice LITE for my Voicemail but that's as far as i will go.

I have not had any more reliability problems than I did with Att. I have only had sms issues once over the past year and the problem solved itself within an hour. Never had a problem with calls. In fact, it seems to be more reliable than carrier service when it comes to calls. I would often have people tell me they tried to call me when on att and i never saw the call in my missed calls list. Even if gv doesn't connect, the call always shows up in your missed call list.

Advantages:
-ability to send/receive sms from your PC
-visual voicemail on prepaid, even services that don't have conditional call forwarding
-VoIP calls from pc using your regular number
-easy call forwarding, including scheduled forwarding
-easy to move to different prepaid services
-access to voicemail from pc even when you don't have your phone
-convenient phone switching
-much better ability to block and screen unwanted calls
-ability to have texts forwarded to email

MMS is a downside if that's important to you. I was willing to give that up for the above advantages (checking texts/voice mails from PC is very useful for people who can't have a cell at work)

-visual voicemail on prepaid, even services that don't have conditional call forwarding --------- 2. i do this with Google Voice "LITE".
-VoIP calls from pc using your regular number-----3. ok but no need for me.

-easy to move to different prepaid services-----------5. ok but no need for me.
-access to voicemail from pc even when you don't have your phone----------6. i do this with Google Voice Lite.
-convenient phone switching------------7. i can do with SIM card.
-much better ability to block and screen unwanted calls---------8. i do from within Android Contacts.
-ability to have texts forwarded to email-------9. ok but no need for me.
-no MMS---------------------10. i need MMS! MMS is critical! no MMS is a dealbreaker. my friends and most people use this daily and i will be out of the loop without it.

Would have to disagree with you gekko. The first disadvantage you mention (GV reliability is not as good as carrier service. GV is stilll flaky IMO) is simply not true. I have used google voice for years and while it used to be a bit flaky (never unusable) it is much better as of late. The second disadvantage (MMS) is definitely a bad one but for me not a show stopper (though very nearly one).

As for advantages, I don't think you truly grasp the power of google voice. For instance you said you use mightytext to send sms from your PC. This isnt the same thing. Mightytext is telling your phone to telling your phone to send the text. Google voice is a true cloud service. Why does this matter? What if your phone is dead? Or you have no signal? Mightytext wont help you there. With google voice if you have wifi you are in business. Phone dead? You can access text and check for missed calls from a computer or someone else's phone. How about traveling overseas? All you need is an internet connection and your phone number works as normal.

Imagine if you could only access your email account from one specific computer and only that computer. Would that be an acceptable limitation? That is what a traditional cell phone number is like. I prefer a phone number that I can use from any device with an internet connection just like my email.

Maybe none of that benefits you. That is fine, I am not trying to convince you to use it. But to tell people there are no benefits is just not right. To me, paying a carrier $20 a month for the right to send text messages when I already pay for data is just throwing money away. It is definitely important to note before recommending someone to GV that they will lose the MMS capability. Besides that there are only benefits. Cheers!

I'm enjoying my Walmart prepaid plan that comes with 5GB data and costs 40-50 each month depending on how many minutes I end up using. What are you paying for the extra 3 gb, $100?

It's amazing to me how people remain loyal to the carriers, much less stick up for them on message boards. In my book, the only thing worse than mobile carriers are cable providers.
