Service Icon Question

Ok...this might be a dumb question, but I looked in the manual and searched the forums and I did not see anything that answered my question right off. I have a Epic on Sprint and live in a 3G area. Every once in a while I will see a gray "3G" icon with a gray "D" below it. Can anyone tell me what that icon means?

Sorry if I missed an explanation somewhere but that term is kinda hard to search for. Thanks!

Got me there, I would think D stood for data, but I think there are arrows for upload and download (could be confusing it with my Froyo Hero, though).
