Setting Up Gifted Nexus 5

Never having owned an Android phone before, I'm not sure how this works. I bought a Nexus 5 for the wife using my Google account from Google Play. Does the phone come pre-configured for that account? Or, does it ask for account information (i.e., my wife's) upon first turning it on?

It does not come pre-configured. It will ask for a Google account email address and password when first turned on.

When you turn on the phone, it will run you through an activation process. Part of this process is attaching a GMail account to the phone.

The Gmail account will be used to populate things like contacts or your Google Play stuff. If your wife is using it, she should use her own Gmail account. If she does not have one, she can create one.

A Gmail account is not required to use any Android phone. But it will simplify a lot of stuff (contacts especially). You definitely need a GMail account to install apps from the official store, although Android allows you to use alternative stores as well (like Amazon) or even install apps manually.

There is nothing really to configure to use the phone. You can skip all this stuff and just start using it immediately if you want. It is stuff you can do later if you need to. The only part of the process that is a requirement is installing the SIM card. That has to be done before you can make phone calls.

Yeah in the past they used to offer this to be done for you but now its easy enough to set up and there was no real advantage of doing it as they weren't going to download your apps etc on to it for you.
