Setting up S10

I have been forced to retire my trusty old S7, after it just died in the middle of a text message last week. Won't turn on, and I have no idea what to do with it.

So, I have acquired a new (factory new, older stock) S10, and I have absolutely no idea what to do to get it set up so I can use it. I honestly don't remember what I did when I went from the old S3 to the S7, so I have no idea how to even begin.

Are there any tutorials or anything out there (on here) to explain in a step-by-step manner, how to set up a new phone from an old one? I've done a cursory search, and not found anything that gave me the Eureka Moment to have any confidence in getting the new phone set up and working.

Any help (for a complete moron like me) would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi, there!

Do you remember your Samsung account information? My mom had a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, and when I was setting up her S10, I was able to use Samsung Smart Switch to easily transfer her files from her old phone to her new one.

Try seeing if your old Samsung phone will still connect with your new S10. If that doesn't work, your Google account will still help you set up your Google Play Store apps and information.

Keep us posted on what happens!

I do seem to recall having that Samsung account, but I have no idea how to access it. I also have no idea how the current S10 could connect to the old S7, since the S7 won't power on at all.

I seem to recall doing a backup, or attempting one a couple of weeks ago or so, but I don't know if it went through or not. And since I can't power on the S7, I have no way to check whether it did or not.

Thanks for the reply, and I most certainly will keep everyone updated.

Can you hook up the S7 to your computer to see if anything will show up on your laptop or desktop?

When you boot up the S10 it should prompt you for your Google account and Samsung account (or to create a Samsung account).

Well, as noted above. When you go through the initial setup of S10, it will ask for your Samsung and Google accounts. You should at least know your Google one. After adding the account(s) it will restore the apps and setting info as much as it can from your S7. You will still need to adjust some afterwards.

Keep us posted on what happens! I used an S10 for about a year and a half, so I'll do my best to remember the ins and outs! The setup process was fairly easy, and I remember being nervous because it was my first-ever Samsung phone! I'm sure it will all work out for you!

I'm sure I could, but without the ability to turn the phone on (because it died) I don't see how the computer would even know it was connected.

I hope you're right.

I still have no idea how to make sure that the phone number stays the same, or that it will even connect to my Verizon account. Are these things automatic?

Did you use a SD card with your S7? You may have data saved on it and can move it over to the S10.

To be honest, I simply do not remember. I think it does have one, but I have no idea how to even check it.

My recommendation is to take both the S7 and S10 to a Verizon office to help you. Make sure to have at least your Google account credentials with you. The Samsung account is secondary, meaning you can deal with that later. Good luck.

I did exactly that today. The young man there took one look, picked up this little tiny pin shaped tool, and within 20 seconds had my new phone working. And there's good news. All of my contacts, call history, and message history are all safe and sound. I've lost all my photos and ringtones, but I had most of those ringtones on my computer (where they originated) so it's not a difficult matter to move copies over again. The only problem I seem to be having now is, how to make the right ringtone work with the right event. I don't seem to have options for selecting tones for message or mail notifications. Only the tones already extant on the phone. That's a minor inconvenience though.

I'd like to thank everyone for their kind assistance. Very much appreciated!

I should take a moment here and tell everyone what's happening with the old S7, and see if anyone can troubleshoot or solve that issue.

I plugged it in to charge overnight yesterday, and this afternoon, before I went to Verizon, I tried to turn it on. I got the "splash screen" that said "SAMSUNG Galaxy S7" and then the screen went black, but there is a tiny red LED light at the top of the phone that has stayed on. Nothing else is happening. Any ideas what that could mean?

Glad to hear you got the S10 working and most of your data transfered. Sorry about the photos. I use Google Photos for cloud backup, and also mini SD card.

As for the S7 issue, my guess is some type of indicator of either bad battery or internal damage.

So glad you got your S10 set up and that everything is working out well for you! Did you back up your photos elsewhere?

With regards to your S7, I'm not too sure what could be going on. If it keeps going from boot screen to blackness, it could be bootlooping.

I know that I backed something up, but I honestly do not remember what it was. I am *fairly* sure I backed up the photos, but without being able to start up the old phone, I have no way to check.

I maybe should make another thread on the S7 boards and see.

What is "bootlooping"?

Bootlooping is when a phone cycles from boot screen to boot screen (ie, seeing the "Samsung" start-up screen) over and over again. Not a very fun time!

Would it be too much to ask for you to explain the fix for that situation? Or is it beyond the capabilities of a simpleton like me?

Oh boy, I'm not sure if there *is* a fix for bootlooping! It is pretty much a feared happenstance when it comes to phones.

You *may* be able to charge the phone and plug it into your computer to access files, but I'm not sure.

For what it's worth, all this started when I picked up the phone to check the time, and just as I swiped the thing to get to the clock app, it just shut off. Wasn't ever able to turn it back on. Charged it up, because I thought it was just a dead battery, but still haven't been able to get anything other than that boot screen and then it just goes black again.

Yikes! That's awful! Older phones will sometimes shut down like that. My brother was using my Pixel 2 that was close to two years old and one day, he got a text and picked up the phone and just couldn't unlock it. So sad!

Phones' lifespans these days are, well, geared toward making you upgrade, in my opinion...
