Setup hangs on "checking for software updates"

Factory reset rooted android blu selfie phone. Following reset setup hangs on "checking for software updates"

Yes, it appears to connect to my home wi-fi, then starts checking for updates and hangs. I had rooted it but then messed it up and decided to do a factory reset.

BTW it is a BLU Selfie phone.

I'll move this to the Blu forum--hopefully someone here can help. Can you describe more of how the rooting process messed up?

The rooting process seemed to work fine. I inadvertently removed google play store and in trying to reinstall it I messed things up. I think it reset OK, but in the setup process it can't get past "Checking for software updates". Something makes me think Device Manager may be involved, but that is beyond my ken.
