severe sms program lag after 2.2??

I had the same kind of problem.

Please do the following:

People, Menu, View and see which entries you have for Facebook and the number of contacts that Facebook has created. Note that Facebook may appear more than once in the list with a number next to each entry.

For me, 650 Facebook contacts had "synched" into 73,500 EVO "People" contacts (ghosts/duplicates).

So while I suspected something was wrong with Froyo 2.2 or another app...(I removed a lot of apps...no improvement)...finding out that FB had fuct my contacts was the REAL answer. I had to remove the FB accounts and delete the data etc. and start over with FB accounts. Keep an eye on this page: People, Menu, View...because that's the only place to see the NUMBER of Contacts (PEOPLE) from each source: Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, etc.

So this is what i got done, they are going to swap me out for a brand new EVO no questions ask.

i DONT think im going to update to 2.2 when i get it, i think i may root 2.1 and remove bloat ware and be a happy camper..

i also got my 30 DAY extended for another 30 days(ppl said this was impossible,it was rather easy), so even though its up on the 15th, they are going to extend for me since im a new customer.

since this is extended, i may go to the epic4g if my new evo continues to have these problems, or that they dont get any EVOs in by that time...

In the BOx...do you have a Facebook account activated on the phone?

i do but i never use it, i like using the mobile site the best..

'in the people menu thing it says

google 1731 Checked..

phone 0

facebook not checked, (131)

Your really missing out on JIT... Froyo is miles better then Eclair

Limit the number of messages saved from one person to 500 or less and this problem should be solved. Just did it on my phone and have virtually no lag now.

Messages > Settings > Delete Text Messages > Text Message Limit.

Went from 1-2 secs of lag, sometimes 3 (not as much as you guys, but also didnt have as many messages) to virtually 0. Problem Solved.

If you still have lag, try a lower number, but you should see a HUGE improvement.

i am 2.2. now, i really love the speed and snappyness..

but as i said before my main thing is SMS, and if under 2.2 i cant SMS correctly, then why even go to it??

ive used Handcent as well, and i found it to be more laggy then the stock program, so thats why i came to feel that it was perhaps the phone having a issue...

im really bummed i cant delete any threads, im going to have to do a hard reset AGAIN...

Do that ^ and it will delete all but the last 500 for each thread. Or any number, hell set it to 5 if you want to just wipe mostly everything, then set it to a higher number.

I did earlier today thinking i found the golden fix, yeah and it didn't fix anything in fact it made it 5 * worse i had to do 4 battery pull and disable that before i got my sms to work as it did before.

Ok.... you're definitely onto something. 500+ friends synched into 69678 contacts. ugh.

yes, that's it. Only sync contacts via "Facebook for HTC Sense" and do not do any contact synching using the "Facebook" or "Facebook for Android" Apps.

Having tens of thousands of PEOPLE/CONTACTS renders the phone and messaging apps inoperable.

I am having the same problems. I have reset my phone a handful of times to no avail. I feel android community relies on the reset too much!

The handcent app is just sooo laggy. Takes anywhere from 5-10 seconds to load it where as before it would instantly snap up. Weird indeed.

Can not even load handcent or stock messages now after several power cycles. ****ing irrate!

i feel your pain, at times with LIGHT smsing the phone works great, ive resorted to using my blackberry 9700 with tmobile for the time being, because the evo is just too irritating trying to deal with these problems. i was having power cycles as well.

my last resort has go to be another hard reset, and i hate that i have to back up/re-do everything again,

this is a bigger issue then i thought.. but because of my post we have figured out a couple bugs with the contacts with facebook, and we also figured out alot more people are having this problem then just me, some slightly different some about the same.

the thing about Handcent is, i think it relies mainly on the stock SMS system itself, so ya it may look different, but the load times are the same or worse because it still does the same thing as the stock app.

I only have 500 goggle contacts synced. Facebook isn't but it was before. I'll wipe my contacts and redownload my google contacts and see what happens

I hate having to do a factory reset for every little thing, I feel every little thing that goes wrong shouldn't need a factory reset!

When I had a large number of messages, around 4000, I ended up having to do a factory reset to get rid of them. I could not delete them and tried numerous apps to delete a large number of messages but none worked.

i agree i think thats would i'm going to have to do because i am still unable to delete any large threads.

well i wiped my contacts and the issue is still there. i might have to resort limiting text per person and see what happens. i only have 4 ppl over 500 texts with one over 1k (closer to 4k)

though it still doesnt explain why 2.1 had no problems at all

i think it has to do with the software and maybe how SMS itself is rendered?

the program is a little different visually, so i would assume its just as different code wise as well.

i guess a fix would be to, wipe your phone via hard reset, after setting it up, set it up to auto delete texts after a certain amount 100-300 maybe?

if i go into the settings and limit the texts now, the phone goes haywire, it literally takes 3-4 battery pulls to get everything normal again.
