My phone is a rooted T-Mobile SGH-M919. REcently, the home button stopped doing what it's been doing for over a year: long press-->running applications; top-->home screen; double tap-->something else.

I have experimented with various launchers, and something called a Go-Locker.

The button works as expected when the phone is booting. When I tap over and over and over again, still nothing, except once in a while, it might respond. PUsing the button may cause an event, as though the screen were tapped, in some cases.

Just before this happened, I used an app called 360CleanDroid, and may have removed some crucial applications, thinking I was removing bloat.
Does any of this mean anything? I suspect a crucial application is missing that handles this key binding business.

Plan is to attempt to return to stock, and perform whatever updates.

Well, I can't tell you exactly but it may be the reason..... This is the reason why it's advised not to root your device ! But I guess rooting your device to do a bit of experimentation isn't that much .... !! Anyway the good thing is you are planning to return to stock ROM, go for it ! Head over to the sammobile/firmware section get the Stock ROM downloaded. Get the latest version of odin by googling it out !! Now use the ODIN to flash the stock ROM over to your device, wait for a while for the flashing process to completes and all done not you can enjoy the stock..... all back to normal !
