Shall we talk about FPS placement

LG G6 can still manage wireless charging and a decently-placed fingerprint sensor. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yes however there is that rumor stating that Samsung started most of their design process on the S8 and Note 8 with the assumption that their fingerprint scanner was going to be under the display and made a last-minute change about 5 to 10 months ago based on the unavailability of that tech for this generation of devices. That's not a good reason to put it in a terrible place but that could explain that they already had so much of the component placement engineered that it was time to just find a place to stash it.

I think it will be really telling to see where they put it on the S9 because that decision was made very early in the design process of the S9.

Great use of the shruggie!

I heard those rumors; however, I forgave Samsung for the terrible FPS placement on the S8s because it was a last-minute decision. But, Samsung had six months to change the design of the Note 8's FPS location and they didn't. I don't understand why. I'm already straining my tiny hands to reach it on the S8. I can't imagine what it'll be like on the Note 8.

How did they have 6 months to change the location for the Note 8? They were still pushing for the embedded FPS in the Note well after the S8 launch.

S8 launch was only 5-6 months ago. Physical design is already final in that time frame. For a period they can have two designs in case one thing or the other comes through, but at a point they have to choose and that was months ago, long before the leaks started, etc.

I understand phone design. My question remains... How does he think they had 6 months to change the design of the Note?

Not trying to defend the placement of the FPS, because it does suck. However...

If you use iris scanning or facial recognition, you can easily set your phone to unlock when pressing the home button. It won't work when your phone is laying flat on a desk. But when it's in your hand, and can read your eyes/face, it's as good as a fingerprint reader. And if you're using facial recognition, you can unlock it as fast as you could with the FPS.

Again, not saying the FPS placement is good. But with the S8/S8+ (and presumably Note 8), Samsung has at least done some things to make it minimally bad.

Yes and things like trusted places, etc also help to alleviate it.

FPS on back - impossible to use when phone lying on a surface & impossible to use if using a folded back wallet case, like Samsung clear view case. Dumb position, period! I hope iris scan is good otherwise it's another year of S7 edge!

Six months, two months...it doesn't matter. The FPS placement sucks. They had time to change it and they didn't.

No, they didn't have time to change it. They weren't going to redesign the phone.

People hated the FPS location on the S8/+ so much that millions and millions of people bought the phone.

FPS on the back is fine, all the best phones except Apple have done this for years. FPS high up on the back, off center and next to the camera is what sucked on the S8.

I can't wait to get the phone so I can put it to the test. The S8 is fine for me but the Note 8 is even taller than the S8+.

Each to their own, but still doesn't solve my 2 issues.

It is taller, but barely. I don't think it'll be a big deal for many people if they're ok with the S8+. Have you tried the plus?

Because before the announcement/release of the S8, they had to decide to abandon the under glass sensor and go with plan B before going into production... they probably could have made the time to redesign the Note 8 too if they decided to abandon it all together for 2017.

And current rumor was that since Apple may not be bringing under glass FPS either to iPhone 8 that Samsung has already decided to go with the rear sensor again for the S9. If they had started on redesign on the Note 8 button back then, then they will be ahead of game for S9 design. OMGoodness it will be such a disappointment if they don't take the effort to put the FPS in a better spot in the S9... absolutely no excuse.

Apple supposedly had a few variations of iPhone 8 testing before they made final decision of which phone to go with into production... Samsung could easily have done the same if they wanted to plan smart.

Yes, S9 design is almost certainly final by now.

Playing with the Note 8 today at BB... the FPS really is in a terrible spot. It's not an absolute deal breaker and feel can adjust to it... but sucks to have to hold the phone in my palm further up the phone than I prefer instead of being able to rest the bottom on my palm comfortably and be able to reach the FPS without the max stretch of the finger. Damn thing is so tall too. :/ But the phone is pretty cool in all other things.

No, I have the S8 but I'll take you're word for it. Plus I have long fingers.
