Should I buy a Nexus 4, 5 or 7?

Hi Android Central,

This is my first post. Anyways I really like the looks of android and have been playing around with jelly bean on my cheap android phone and have been enjoying it. The phone is good and all but it will never get updates. I am also highly invested in iOS and buy all my music from iTunes. I would be fine with Google Play Music if the songs work in iTunes on my laptop.

So I have been looking at vanilla android google devices and might get one. I just can't decide which one to get. I know the Google Play store no longer sells the Nexus 4 but T-Mobile does for $19.99 up front then $17 a month for 24 months plus a $10 SIM starter kit. I also have been looking at rumors for the Nexus 5 and could also wait for that. Then of course I could also get a Nexus 7 tablet. Just so everyone knows I like smaller devices like the iPod Touch. Someone help me decide.

Wait for the 5 we are really close . As far as the 7 is if you want a 7 inch tab go for it . I also think we will see a new N10 soon so hold off on that as well

N7 is one of the best 7" tabs on the market and the 2nd gen units fixed a couple things that sucked about the original version. If you want a tablet and like that form factor, I highly recommend it.

Phone - Wait for the new generation Nexus 4 or "5? or if you need a phone right now I would suggest

Tablet - Nexus 7 2013 edition all the way. I received an early production unit the day after the announcement which was July 25th. I have not experienced any issues with it and frankly is hands down the best 7 inch tablet. Fantastic display, great price, great specs, you really just can't go wrong.

Wait a week to see if anything official gets announced about the Nexus 5 (or whatever its called). Some rumors suggest we could know something as early as tomorrow, Oct 15th. In any event, don't buy it from T-mobile for $427. It wasn't that long ago that Google Play was selling the same phone for $249 new, and once the Nexus 5 gets released you'll be able to get a great price on eBay for one. The Nexus 7 is a a great device. A have the first gen and have been very happy with it.

So, which phone do you have, then? Obviously you do not have a Nexus 4. And given that's the case, why are you posting here in the N4 area?

Apple maintains a walled garden around iOS and all related services and products. Yes, it's possible to get a degree of interoperability between them, but trying to keep this up is literally going to be like a cat-and-mouse game because Apple doesn't like you using non-Apple products and services.

First off, why are you bothering to pursue Android if, as you said, you are so heavily invested with iOS? What benefit do you expect to derive from this? What are you willing to do to truly benefit from AndroidOS? How much are you willing to commit to becoming genuinely knowledgeable and self-sufficient? When are you planning on walking away from Apple and into the larger world of technology, and in particular into the world of free and open-source software?

Because, until you can really answer those sorts of questions, there's not a whole lot of point in trying to suggest anything that might be appropriate.

All of the devices are bigger than an iPod touch...which has like a 3.5 or 4 inch screen. Nexus 4 has a 4.97 in. And Nexus 7 has a 7 in screen.

Stick with Apple of you want a small screen...

I currently have a ZTE Valet from Straight Talk and was using it to help me decide on Android. I was just posting in this area because I had questions mostly about the Nexus 4 and I didn't see a forum for Nexus 5.

I don't really care about my apps because I only have the free versions, my contacts are saved in Google also, I don't care which calendar I use. The only big thing I like from apple is iTunes but as long as I can buy songs with Google Play Music and download them to my laptop I will be fine.

Wow lots of questions. I do like iOS but now after a month of consistent use of iOS 7 I have tired of how it works and looks and now Apple won't let people downgrade to iOS 6 anymore. My biggest reason to get involved with Android is because I want to be able to do more customization. I also enjoy learning new things and trying out different electronics on the market. I never said anything about leaving Apple I just want to use Android also. Currently I have a Mac Book Air, iPod Touch 5g and a ZTE Valet.

I mostly said that for reference to explain that 4 to 5 inch screens is what I like in my devices.

The Nexus 4 or new Nexus phone would be right in that range. Maybe stick with the iPhone and get Nexus 7 tablet?

Your thoughts and approach to things are much like myself. You can listen and take in a lot of different opinions about different systems to gain a lot of good information, which I do by reading all over the internet. But in the end I've been willing to try different things to find out myself what I think I like.

After using windows computer a call my life I decided to buy a Macbook in 2008 to try out Apple. I used it for 4 years and then handed it over to my oldest son for college who is the big Apple lover in the family. I wanted to try windows 8 so I got a new PC this year. Found out I really like it. I don't see the big hang up many people have voiced about it. In the mean time got my wife an ipad2 when they came out. The first smart phones she and my oldest son got were a 4s and an i5 each. The iPad is OK, lots a great apps, but iOS just doesn't do much for me.

My first smart phone was a palm pre then when WP7 came out I got a Trophy to see what windows phones were all about. I used that for about a year then after reading a lot about android and had this first impressions looking at them in the Verizon store that they were too confusing to use, I figured I'd never know for sure what they were like till I tried it. So bought a VZ GN on eBay that was already rooted and I messed around with that for several months flashing some new ROMs after learning how to do it. I liked being able to change the looks of my phone.

Well then my wife and sob surprised me last Christmas with a new N7. I love the size of it over the iPad and I love vanilla android. I found myself wanting that for my phone and always being able to get the most up to date android os so early this year I got the N4.

With my wife and son having I phones I have them around to mess with to know I will not own one, but I still use iTunes on my windows 8 computer having used iTunes back from my Mac days. I like iTunes still to get my music because you can't beat their library to select from. So I use a Google program on the PC to sync my iTunes library to my Google music cloud and I listen to it on the N4 and N7 along with my subscription to All music.

Since then this year I picked up a used Lumia 920 on eBay so I could try out WP8. I like it. There are things I guess I like both about WP8 and android. Meantime though my wife wants to try out the windows phone so I've set her up on it first just to try out the functions on it via WiFi. I'm on a prepaid service and we're looking to get her and my son off Verizon also, so if she likes the 920 she'll keep that and I'll keep using the N4.

Again though through trying different things, which by the way prepaid service is the way to go if you want to be able to change devices when you want to, I feel I have a good appreciation to what all iOS, WP8 and android have to offer.

Wait out for the new one. See what is it is like, there is no regrets if you don't choose it.

I would prefer a phone as you would use it more getting more for your dollar.

I decided today after Google leaked the Nexus 5 for $349 that I will get a used Nexus 4 8GB on eBay. I bid on one today and currently I'm the only one who has bid on it. I am winning for $99.99.

Just curious - what made you decide you wanted a used 8gb Nexus 4? After seeing the Nexus 5.

I decided on a Nexus 4 because I had planned to only spend $299 on the Nexus 5 and it is $349. I don't want to spend that much on a phone I plan to use as a wifi only device. I returned my Android tracfone and downgraded to a flip phone. So I plan to have a tracfone that costs $10 a month and a Nexus 4 as my device to download apps, listen to music, browse the web and use Google Voice on talkatone to text for free when I am in a wifi zone.
