Should I buy a pixel phone for my next phone and ditch Samsung?

re:

Well what ? Are we talking the same phone? Snapdragon or Exynos? Because I'm watching comparison videos and the S9+ is showing better battery life.
The S9 and S9+ have been almost universally acknowledged as having poor battery life, especially compared to the S8/S8+. That's by reviewers and users alike; they're not saying that it is horrible, but that it's nowhere near as good as expected and even the exynos, which would normally be a bit better... this time isn't. There are dozens and dozens of reputable source on this topic and it was one of the most unexpected things that we found out about the S9/S9+.

re:

I don't have any confidence in the test since we don't know how controlled it is. Having said that if if all thing are equal, the differences in battery performance are not enough for me to buy or dismiss a phone based on battery life. Also I had a V30 for two weeks and wasn't that impressed with battery.

Well one major thing that escapes rundown tests, is that the biggest factor in good battery life is ... the ability to idle well. Display is always going to be the biggest % of battery used as a % of all other things, but it's rarely more than 50% of total battery for the vast majority of users. The best test for battery life is not a run down test, it is looking at your phone at the end of the day - is it still reasonably well charged? Clearly that's anecdotal and very much unlike me to say, but the phones with the best battery life are lasting through a full day and well into the next. If reviews and the forums are any clue, the S9+ is mostly able to make it through the full day, but that's about it.

And the battery life will differ for each and every person. My mom usually takes my previous phones, and in her hands the phones last 2 days single charge just like how the manufacturer states. Whatever phone I use, I don't think I ever hit a rating of over 20hrs for a usage from 100 to 0.

I've never seen a phone that has such a difference in reviews as the S9+. If you watch a lot of reviews on battery or camera a lot of reviewers praise it and yet you come the forums and people criticize the battery, camera etc. I really believe that they had different shipments with really good S9+'s and one's that had problems. Kind of like the Pixel 2XL screen. A lot of people say it's horrible and yet a lot of people say nothing is wrong with it.

It's definitely dififcult to get a consensus from reviewers.

Here's one that says the S9+ is worse than the S8+

And gsmarena agrees: https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s9-review-1734p3.php "Anyway, the Galaxy S9 achieved an overall Endurance rating of 78 hours, which is a few hours behind the Galaxy S8 because of the mediocre standby performance".

As well as iMore's commentary: https://www.imore.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-battery-life-problems-and-what-it-means-apple "Samsung perpetually feels a generation behind when it comes to efficiency". WARNING, BIAS ALERT. iMORE is approximately the BGR of Mobile Nations, especially when commenting on Samsung products.

And anandtech: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12520/the-galaxy-s9-review/8 "The Exynos 9810 Galaxy S9 absolutely fell flat on its face in this test and posted the worst results among our tracking of the latest generation devices, lasting 3 hours less than the Exynos 8895 Galaxy S8. This was such a terrible run that I redid the test and still resulted in the same runtime".

And Android Central: https://www.androidcentral.com/samsungs-exynos-processor-causing-poor-battery-life-galaxy-s9 "That sort of battery performance is abysmal for a flagship phone like the Galaxy S9".

And Android Pit: https://www.androidpit.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-battery-review (I didn't know they still existed)

Main point there is the first 10 results on googling, "s9 review battery life" - are all reviews of the battery life sucking, but almost exclusively blaming it on the exynos version.

All of them agree the S845 version gets much better battery life, however that too is not ahead of the main competition:

battlife2.png

"The Snapdragon 845 Galaxy S9+ fared relatively well, even though it’s not quite as good as other devices".

Etc. Then the forums, doing what the forums do.... shredded it. According to the forums, it's the worst battery life of any phone that has ever existed, including the Note 7, and that one was on fire. etc, etc.

Biggest point here... is the battery life on the S9+ good enough to where most normal people would never know that there is an issue, if there even is one? Yep, probably. Is it better than the P2XL? Probably not, but then again... it might make a major difference on how you use it.

re:

Sounds like new iPhones, Note 9,and new Pixels all around the same time. Some tough choices to make.

It's an easy choice to make if your requirements are to always have the latest unadulterated Android operating system and immediate Android security updates.

Pick your poison....I don't need to wait to decide. I'll either go with a 3XL or stay with my 2XL another year if there are no significant improvements. I would prefer to upgrade sooner to get the most money back from the 2XL, but we will see. For the moment the 2XL suits me just fine.

I'm excited with all the choices & I'll have to wait to see which is best for me

re:

Shut up everybody knows your pre-ordering a 3XL before you even know what it is.

If you're nice I'll show it to you a couple months before release!
