Should I install the Oreo update?

Small update. I made Textra the default "messages" app for now, and I got the message bubble back. Unless we get an update from Samsung I don't see anything else working.
I tried textra also, and will keep it even if Samsung fixes their problems. I like all of the functions in textra that never have been in Samsung SMS.

I have had awful results with the new update. My phone is just so much slower, and some apps like Snapchat and Facebook are so slow that I don't even use them anymore.

Try "wipe cache partition." I do it from time to time anyway, especially after an update.

tried doing this today but can't get my phone to boot into recovery mode ... held volume up and down and power buttons until logo screen, released power button while still holding volume buttons, and phone booted up into carrier mode ... did this process change with Oreo?

Volume Up+Home, then add Power. Volume Down+Home (plus Power) is download mode. Volume Up+Volume Down (plus Power) is "ignore me, just start".

New? No, it's always been that way with Samsung.

I have the g930vvru4bqg1 version and the update isn't available to me apparently. I only knew it existed because my GF got it on her S7. Not sure I want it with what I've been reading. I pretty much hate learning curves and I don't want to have to reset a lot of settings on my phone.
Is there any real advantage to Oreo on the S7?

So far, there don't appear to be any issues for me so far. Battery life may even be better but I feel i'd need to test again. I feel a number of issues I've seen discussed here are to do with minor functional differences but for me there's been no reliability issues, touch wood.

I'm trying to figure out if there are any substantial advantages. I'll just stick with the old version if there's really not going to be much of an upgrade. I already use Textra. Is there a way to make sure I don't upgrade automatically?

I'm not going to update to Oreo. The update from Marshmallow to Nougat caused my phone (SMG 935V) to be "searching for service" after every restart, requiring an outgoing phone call to be made to restore service. Samsung hasn't done anything to address the issue, so as far as I'm concerned, if it ain't too broke, don't fix it.

Fill your phone up with apps. I have the update notification all the time, but there's not enough room to download it :)

Well that's one workaround but isn't there a setting of some kind to disallow ota updates?

I'm not sure. I don't know if the notification with the "System Update Available" will stay in your notifications until YOU choose to install it, or if after a certain period of time, it automatically installs.

So 170 million people use Oreo, and receive security updates which staying on nougat loses out on for you, but why exactly wouldn't you? This forum and its isolated problems, usually self inflicted, is subjective. Of course most things posted here are problems.
Find a app for the message tone loss in oreo and stay updated.

May be, but my S7 works. This is my only phone. It's not worth the risk of it bricking when in a few months the S10+ will be released and I can just upgrade straight to it. Messaging tone is not a huge factor....still kinda crappy it was changed, but I could live without it/work around it, but the chance of it breaking during the update is my biggest fear.

My GF's S7 updated and she said it was a pita. She had to re-do settings on her apps and at least one app no longer works. I was just thinking to avoid the hassle. It doesn't seem to be an option for me at this point anyway so might be moot. I also just cracked the back of the phone badly though it still seems to work ok. 3rd phone in 10 months.

So long as you don't get malware you should be fine. But the stats are what they are.

not gonna get malware. security updates are going to continue to be released well past me upgrading to the s10. even then there will be an announcement that support for Nougat is stopping.

you may be correct. there are probably more people that didn't have an issue upgrading to Oreo, but the fact that there is a chance of it happening is not a chance I'm going to take.

I have an S7 and just did the update about 1 week ago. Was nervous about it but it went fine and my phone is working great. I had no problems of any kind, neither with an apps after the upgrade.
