Should I wait until Pixel 3 to upgrade my gf's S7, or would it be fine to upgrade her to Pixel

My girlfriend has had the Samsung Galaxy S7 for a little over two years and I was looking to upgrade her phone to either a Google Pixel 2 or 3. Should I just upgrade her now or wait for the Pixel 3?

Unless you don't think her S7 will last until October I'd just wait until the Pixel 3 dust settles.
If nothing else you could probably get a better deal on a Pixel 2 just before the 3 launches.

If you don't need to purchase right away, then for sure wait.

I agree, if it is running ok, I'd wait. As previously stated, you might be able to get a deal on a Pixel 2/2XL but if you aren't worried about a deal and want to get her on the newest thing, I'd wait if you can.

I don't think the changes from a 2 to a 3 are going to be that earth shaking, just my opinion. But a lower priced P2 would get my attention right now and there are some deals on new ones. If the Samsung will last till October you could wait and get a look at the P3's then decide to go for a 3 or a 2 at that point. Should be even better deals on 2's then if the 3 doesn't ring enough bells for her.

Mod note: So moved this one out of the Pixel 2 forum since it's not about the Pixel 2.

One thing to consider... everyone in this thread is probably planning to pre-order, and if you get the 2 now and don't pre-order the three, that increases their odds of being able to get one on launch day.

Thank you for all your responses, I appreciate it! It just reinforces my personal belief that it'd be best to wait for the Pixel 3. Her S7 is still in great shape and will definitely last until October. In general, she takes really good care of her phones and makes them last for years (& is content with staying with the same device for a while). Yet, this decision is still a nuanced one for me to make.

She uses the headphone jack regularly on her S7 (still a big fan of wired audio and having the option to fast charge and listen to music at the same time) and isn't crazy about the tall aspect ratio displays that many of these new smartphones are coming out with.

In fact, that's part of the reason why I was considering the Pixel 2; it retains the 16:9 aspect ratio screen that she's used to. Anyway, let's be honest, Google is unfortunately not going to put the headphone jack back on any of their phones (even though it'll come with a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack dongle, it still sucks not having one built into the phone itself) and the Pixel 3 is most likely going to have a screen with a 2:1 aspect ratio.

So, I've been thinking of just getting her the Galaxy S9; she’s already familiar with Samsung’s interface and she’ll be able to keep the headphone jack. But, she actually doesn't like curved screens either lol.

The reason why I believe she doesn't like tall/curved screens is that it is easier for her to navigate the UI with phones that are normally sized and have normal screen shapes compared to ones that are different (so that she isn't overextending her fingers to reach parts of the screen). Also, it is much easier to find a tempered glass screen protector for a normal display than for a curved one (and she always puts one on all her phones, along with a case).

I think she could deal with a phone with just a tall screen, but a phone with a tall and curved screen, I'm not so sure about (even though the S9 has arguably the best display in the smartphone industry today).

Additionally, the fact that there aren’t any good accessories from reliable manufacturers that enable simultaneous wired music listening and fast charging for Android smartphones is off-putting (won’t need to worry about that potential issue with the S9). These accessory manufacturers need to step it up (or y’know, Google should just include a headphone and fast-charge adapter in the box, along with a pair of decent USB-C earbuds lol).

I know that this is a long write-up but I have been thinking deeply about all this. I do think that the Pixel 3, in many aspects, will turn out to be the better phone than the S9. But, the S9 will certainly have features that make it the superior device, too. So, right now it’s basically S9 vs. P3. What do you all think?

Well, like you posted above, if she is already familiar/invested with the Samsung OS; then I'd personally recommend the S9. It's a fantastic device. My boyfriend's brother got the lavender S9 (it's a gorgeous colour) and loves it! Plus, if you wait until October, you'll probably find more deals on the S9 as it would be a bit older by then.

Please keep us posted on what you decide!

My gf isn't too picky as as far as UI goes, so I don't think that would be a huge deal if she potentially went from S7 to Pixel 3. But I'm waiting on how the camera will be on the Pixel 3. The S9 has a great camera, but I would like to compare it to the P3, see how it stacks up. But those deals you mentioned could be the deciding factor, especially if the Pixel 3 at launch will cost significantly more than the S9 at that point. Either way, I'll keep you posted on what happens next. Thanks for your input!

If she is not picky about manufacturer-specific UI's, then for sure, either device would be great options! But you are smart to wait and see what the Pixel 3 has to offer. The Pixel 2 line hit a real home run with the camera experience (and the original Pixel line did a great job with their cameras, as well); so it indeed makes sense to anticipate that the 3 line will also deliver a solid camera experience.

And if the Pixel 3 line does indeed debut in the fall, then Black Friday is around the corner... And then there will be Pixel 2 deals! Picking up last year's flagship is a prudent move as well; as you are still getting an awesome phone with great specs - it's just at a reduced cost at that point in time because it's not as "new" as its new cousin that was just released. Decisions, decisions!

No problem at all, and yes, please keep us posted! :)

No need to spend $1000 on a Pixel 3, just get the 2 when you see a great deal for it. I'm sure she can learn how to use a Pixel, it isn't a new language.

If she has been with an older phone for such a long time then there is no need to get the latest and greatest. Everyone here is telling you what they want to do, not what would really suit your situation.
