Turn sync on from your settings/notification pannel (consumes battery)

Synch is when your phone checks to see if there is any emails. It's analogue of you walking out to the mailbox to check your mail... You usually can turn it off completely meaning it will only check when you want it to. Uses least battery and data. Or you can set the frequency of these checks.. The more often it synch, the more battery and data you use.
Usually they can auto synch, or you can set them up to only do it on WiFi...
You choose the option that works for you. I block all my email clients and check my emails only when I chose to.
