Shouldnt work this way, but forget Verizon I rooted.

No, just disgusted with people who are compelled to display their inability to either comprehend or attempt to comprehend that their way is not the only way or the right way. Included in that is the need to call names and make personal attacks to those who hold varying opinions.

Paul,

I apologized (twice) for name-calling. I had a poor choice of language. Believe me, I can and do comprehend that my opinion is just that - an opinion. The subject of this thread was rooting and installing custom roms on a phone that Verizon has taken (in my opinion) way too long to send out an update.

If you are truly disgusted, might I suggest doing something else besides trolling away on this forum, like perhaps taking a long walk off a short pier (JUST KIDDING).

Written "smugly" ;)

Have a nice day sir.

Kasha and anyone else who can help,
I think I'm ready to unlock and root for the new radios. Anyway, first step I'd like to back up as much as i can. I know I can back up pictures but is there anything else I can such as contacts?
Then should I use Wugs toolkit or Cyber Warrior? I've never done anything like this before so I'm very nervous. I've been reading both and like the instructions better in Cybr Warriors but is Wugs easier like they say? Thanks everyone.

Well, by your own admission, you bought the phone to play with. I bought it because I wanted a phone first and foremost. It fails at that.

As I have mentioned several times on this site, a little research before buying an expensive "phone" (or any piece of tech for that matter) should be common place. I had no allusions about what I was buying. Hell, even the Verizon Rep I bought it from warned me (I really didn't need him to) that it was a Google Developer phone and there would be bugs for a while. I wanted the Nexus experience and all that that entailed.

All of the above being said, I have had NO dropped calls, poor 4G/3G hand offs, or any of the other reported gripes on this site or other sites. And I'm not the only one either. I freely admit others haven't been so lucky. I also admit that there have been reported and legitimate hardware defects, but the majority of these problems have been addressed through newer units and warranty replacements.

People who are unhappy have a few choices as I see it:

1. Warranty Replacement

2. Unlock/Root/Rom

3. Sell it and put yourself out of your misery.

Wining and complaining (coulda, shoulda, woulda) isn't going to get you anywhere. There ARE solutions.

sms backup + will backup texts and call logs.

backup contacts/calendar/all that to gmail.

to be extra safe with contacts you can also export a copy to sd card, then back that up on the cpu.

backup everything on sd card you want to save to cpu as it will be erased.

As for unlocking/rooting, wugs is very simple as it will do most of the work for you, but CW's guide is also very easy and informative. Either will be fine once you get the drivers installed and the files you need set up.

I would agree with everything he said. SMS Backup + is great - free app and backs up to your gmail account! Your pictures/music - I will copy all over to a portable hard drive/flash drive - whatever.

Wugs is great for rooting/unlocking - took a minute! Depending on your computer - the hardest part is getting the drivers installed - didn't take long for me, but I have heard of folks having issues with Win XP - 7 is a breeze.

Welcome to the addiction!! If you are interested, I am running AOKP - Milestone 5 (seems to be the most stable and have the most "tweaks and options" of everything out there (opinion only) - I added NateMZ's red theme option (I love red) and then use Franco's Kernel - Milestone 3 - helps with batt life and seems to make the OS run a little faster.

All of these links can be found over at XDA developers under Galaxy Nexus development. Also at rootzwiki for the rom and theme downloads. Those are the two sites I frequent (besides this one).

The whole process the first time will take an hour or so - after that, it takes about 30 minutes from flash to have my phone set up after a rom update.

Good luck - PM me if you are stuck or need help!!

OH - one more thing - it you plan on doing this - Titanium Backup PRO with root is a must purchase. It will allow you to back up all of your apps with the data residing on them and restore very quickly - saves a ton of time!! Roman from AOKP even has a detailed instruction set in his FAQ's that describe EXACTLY how to do this so it's fast and easy - I have a word doc of those instructions if you want a copy.

...OUT!
