Simple way to voice dial?

I was uber upset when they removed speed dial. Work around? Add to home screen or favorites... No thank you. Is there a simple way to just voice dial without using skivi or whatever? I have heard about Google Now but don't really understand the concept. Frankly, it doesn't appeal to me.

Help?

Just tap the microphone on the top of the home screen and say "call John" or whomever. If you have your headphones on, long press the mic button and it will launch Google Now and just say the same.
