single button headphones problem

I have an old Nokia the boom headphone which has one button that works like this
Single click : play/pause
Double click : previous
Triple click : next
Anyway the clicking works perfectly on both of my previous phones that are a lumia 920 and an HTC one m7
But on my 2014 moto x this doesn't work at all instead I hear some sort of pulse in my headset like an old landline phone pulsing
Is there anyway that solves this problem ? I tried the control apps but they don't work
Currently I have Android 6.0 but the problem has existed ever since I bought the device on 5.1

My guess would be the headphones just aren't compatible with the moto x. For instance the headphones that came with my iPhone work with the moto x but not the note 4.
