Over the last week or so there has been much talk about skype video chat finally on Android devices. Since I have skype installed and accepted the latest update from the marketplace i decided to give it a shot and see if i can put my front facing camera to use. Well voice works great but there was no video, or any option to turn video chat on anywhere. So what i would like to know is if there is a setting that needs to be turned on or like what seems to be the case lately that the Droid Charge was again left out on the list of devices to be compatible with?

The Charge runs Froyo. As far as I know, to run the skype video chat, you need to be running gingerbread. So we were unfortunately left out on the update :(

Maybe someone who has a rooted gingerbread rom could tell us if skype video chat is working?

Going to semi-hijack this thread and ask if the droid charge can do google talk video chat? I can't seem to figure out how to start it...

So basically when the guy at the verizon store said my phone has facetime, there is a reason the guy sells cell phones for a living.

So the droid charge basically cannot video chat in either skype or google talk until it upgrade to gingerbread?

There is a fella on xda with a modded apk that works for some. I tried it, incoming video and sound works, out going video shows up black for me. Can get a ffc black box or a rear cam black box for now :D

Oh, on 2.2 w/nitro's rom and pbj time

Have you guys tried Qik? I received an email stating how it was bought out and is now under Skype and how it was much improved with new features. So I downloaded it and used it between my wife's Thunderbolt (running the leaked Gingerbread build BAMF Sense 3.0) and my DInc2 (running official Froyo) and it worked. It worked well at that. I had video and voice going without any problems? No one else received this email? If not, see if you can find the app in the market and try it out.

I tried Qik on my Charge and it wasn't making use of the front-facing camera. Fring and Tango seem to be the best options atm for front-facing video calls. I use Fring and it works great :)

I recommend Fring. My wife downloaded it for her iPhone and it is probably the only cross-platform video chat that really works on our phones.

Tango works for me too. I use my Charge to chat with my wife on her Ipad 2.

I tried it as my wife also has a DC, but we both hated the fact that it opened up to your entire contact list...I have over 1400 that sync with my exchange server and she is a university professor and doesn't want to Tango with her students! Guess we have to wait for Skype or Google + circles. Don

I use Fring, and it works fine. I talk to my friends on iPhones and TBolts. It won't be long before video chat comes via google+/gchat, though.

As I understand it, Skype are not using the front-facing video API's in gingerbread as yet.. They have four specific models they support.. I am hoping that they will move to the API's in the future to make it easy to support a large userbase without specific code for each model.. That will also mean waiting for GB (or rooting to an existing GB, which isnt an option for me).

I wouldnt expect to see an official Skype w/ video for the Charge before GB though - it might be wasted effort for them. I am more than happy to be pleasantly surprised though. :)

I've been having trouble w/ Fring on Charge to TBolt calls. User on the other end says my audio is really soft even though their volume is turned all the way up. Anyone else experience this?

Yes i've experienced the same thing. Fring volume is way too low.

It seems like theres no perfect video chat app for the droid charge

Tango should work but when it put it on speaker (since you should for front face camera). the audio really sucks..video aint bad

Qik has the best video for me but the current Qik version doesnt support the charge so I cant switch to front face camera

I emailed Qik and they are working on a SW update at least

I want to try google chat video if we 2.3.4

Tried a video google chat on a laptop to a rooted TBolt running 2.3.4 based CM7 and it was awesome. So hopefully the official 2.3.4 won't be too far away for the entire lineup of dual camera androids.

I hope 2.3.4 will come out for the charge soon
We'll see
2.2 Froyo took forever
I hope its not the same, I came from a fascinate and almost got the Dinc2, still considering the swap
