Sleep Mode - displaying the clock and notifications

My phone is set up to display the clock and notifications during Sleep Mode by tilting the phone, and it will just display that and won't go back into awake mode.

I usually do this by holding the phone vertically. However, it's inconsistent. When you do this, is tilting vertically the only way it will happen?

I have a Moto E Gen 2. Daydream mode is turned off.

I was hoping that slightly tapping the screen or phone will also do it, but it usually doesn't.
