Slow Gmail when uploading large e-mails

I have the Epic 4g, no hacks and not rooted. I have the D18 update.

I notice that when I send an e-mail via G-mail that includes a photo (~1.5 MB), my G-mail hangs up, and the e-mail gets stuck in my outbox.

I usually end up having to discard the e-mail to clear my outbox.

Is there a fix for this? What can I do?

Do you happen to be over WiFi when doing this? There is a known bug where Gmail gets stuck on "Sending" when you're trying to send an Email over WiFi.

Is this only with attachments? I've sent thousands (okay not really but you get the point :p) of emails over WiFi thru the gmail app and never had a problem... but I haven't tried attachments yet... strange...

Wow. I did not know about this bug, Moderator Chris. Where can I find more info about this? Is there a post/link somewhere?

And, what is the solution? Should I just stick to 3G or 4G connections when sending e-mails that contain photos via G-mail? Will it still actually send the e-mail with photo attachments via G-mail? I have tried it, but it still hangs...

Sending Gmail message over WiFi

For me it seems to happen for messages only with attachments. If there's no attachment it sends just fine over WiFi. As far as a solution goes, the only one I have seen (and I've done EXTENSIVE searching on this) is to simply disable WiFi and send it over your Data connection. It's frustrating when you're at home or in a place where you are using WiFi, but I have found absolutely no solutions to this issue other than disabling WiFi until you've sent the email. Again though, it only happens to me if there is an attachment in the Email I'm trying to send.

I've literally waited 2 or 3 hours, and it still will say "Sending".

Do you think the upgrade to Froyo might fix this problem?

I can only hope. I'm running the DJ05 update right now and the problem is still there, so I hope they fix it with Froyo. At first I thought it was just problems on Gmail's end, but after it was still happening after a few days I realized it was something more than that.

Hey Chris,

I managed to send an 8 mb movie from my Epic 4g to someone else using G-mail over WIFI. I tried sending an e-mail via Gmail with the 8 mb attachment the first thing in the morning after I turned on my phone and the WIFI radio. I sent the e-mail and put down my phone expecting it to fail. When I came back later to check on the phone, I noticed the e-mail had been cleared (I did not see it in the outbox with the "Sending..." message). I checked the Sent folder on my phone and it indicated that the e-mail had been sent.

I send attachments all the time using gmail over wifi g and n - I am on di18 and have no problem - bought my Epic in first week of December - maybe I am lucking - as I waited until the end of the year to buy the Epic in hopes that most of the bugs were worked out by now.

I have to say my Epic works fine in all respects including wonderful gps - although it still doesn't lock onto a signal as fast as an evo gps - but for the most part it does.

I just sent a test email to myself with an attachment over WiFi and the issue is still there. Sometimes it works, sometimes it hangs. I don't know if it's more of a Fascinate thing or if it's something else. Thanks for coming back with results though. I think I've seen this issue over on the Android developers page on Google, I'll go check and see.
