Slow WiFi Speeds

I'm on my second Pixel C, I RMA the first due to the touchscreen issues. This far, no touchscreen issues on the new one, and no WiFi issues but I don't think this tells me anything.

What's interesting is the first Pixel C I got when unboxed and updated, didn't include things like sheets, docs, keep ... Setup as new device. This time around they were installed. The first one also had the "Google Play Services needs updating" message but the second one did not.

Just more anecdotal evidence that perhaps Google is aware of some general early issues and hopefully WiFi as stated is one.

My second one just now developed the touchscreen issue everyone has been talking about. The Pixel C has been idle on the charger for about 2 days and I used it for evermore testing today and it happened. Rebooting didn't help. Booting into safe mode fixed this. When I rebooted out of safe mode it was still fine. I think I've read this same phenomenon on here before. This is a mess. This though is most likely a software issue in my opinion.

I got the "google play services needs updating" on both units and both had google docs etc already installed.

Google is definitely aware of the wifi issue see the link above your post. :)

If these things are not rectified by Jan 21st (end of return window) they will probably see a flood of these things coming back. Mine included.

Well I dropped mine off at UPS today. My WiFi actually worked ok for the last couple days but at this point I'm just kind of over it. I already have a 10 inch LG tablet and yeah, hardware wise there pixel c blows it away. But no matter how nice it is to hold and look at its still just an Android tablet and I've decided I don't use them enough to justify a $700 purchase. Or even just $550 for the tablet itself. My LG costed $350 and I shouldn't have even spent that. But for $700, this thing has too many potential issues.

Agree, completely unacceptable for such a expensive device.

What's most frustrating is that the two fundamental aspects of a WiFi only touchscreen device are the two bugs on this premium tablet.

Couple that with the lack of communication from Google (a forum post from a random developer doesn't count as communication to me) and this is on a short list of "worst launches ever."

I tolerated ram management issues on the N9, suffered through Chrome restarts, and ulock to black screens, but the f***ing touchscreen and wireless, really!?!?

I need to look closely at the return policies today, on my 2nd one, and I really love this device when it works and am optimistic (or was) for future development on it, but given the lack of acknowledgement and issues, I'm seriously considering just boxing it up and giving into a Surface.

I don't want to become the fanboy I hate so much, and keep this just because it's a beautiful device, that's makes me no better than those I love to poke at on the other side of the fence!

So the Google Store has a line that says this:

Extended holiday return period:*Purchases made on the Google Store between November 27, 2015 and December 25, 2015 can be returned until January 22, 2016.

The Google Store doesn’t do exchanges. You can return your purchase and use your refund to buy something else though.

That last line, is that just saying they will refund your money to your original payment method, and then you obviously can then purchase something else or is it implying they give you a "credit" to Google Store and you have to use the refund within Google Store?

The more I read it the more I'm confused.

Its a good point but the extended return period is for when you get something as a gift but it is not opened for weeks until around the holidays. But you are right it is a bit confusing. With a purchase of this size I will confirm with google chat here...

Edit: It is confirmed that we have until January 22nd 2016 for a full refund. Good call on the double check. It has put my mind at ease a little bit more. :)

Ok so for this replacement Pixel C and keyboard I have until Jan 22nd 2016 for a full refund?

Yes.
You're right.

Thanks -- puts my mind at ease more, and gives us more time to decide.

Makes sense now that I read it more I think they're saying they don't do exchanges. They put a hold on a new charge for an ordered replacement but process the returning item as a return instead of an exchange.

PSA:

dkryder over at XDA forums is trying to figure out if the WiFi issue is a bad batch. If you want, input your first 5 digits and a description if you have the WiFi download degradation or not:

mapping problems to serial # | Google Pixel C

Any info helps!

I'm kind of hoping it's just a bad batch. Maybe the second wave will have these issues taken care of. It also sounds like the screen issue might be software related. I'm still hopeful for this device, but can't pick one up until I know these issues have been taken care of.

I'll admit that leaving in landscape I've not had a single issue with WiFi or touchscreen, however I'm too afraid to "try and break" this RMA Pixel C I got last week so I can't say if putting it back to auto-rotate will cause issues although I can't see how that would impact WiFi.

Hey Everyone,

Want to come in here and give you all an update. The team is investigating the issue with poor download speeds on the Pixel C. Thanks for continuing to give us additional information such as router model and WiFI configurations. I'll keep this thread updated with any info I can get over here.

As much as I don't like Apple, looks like I may go Ipad Pro instead of this. The wi-fi and touchscreen issues seem very prevalent. I handled the Pro at the mall and it seems impressive. Jailbroken I can do a lot anyway (I had a Ipad before). I'm tired of these Google product issues, nexus 7,9, etc. It's getting old already.

Except for the fact it all seems software based. iOS 9.2 has its own problems and it *certainly* isn't bug free. If you're looking for a perfect device, none exist.

While o agree that there isn't a perfect device, iOS 9.2 doesn't have any bugs that are nearly as bad as what the Pixel C is suffering from right now. The wi-fi and touchscreen issues are pretty major. While they may get fixed at some point, those are absolutely deal breakers for me.

While I will never go to iOS for personal reasons, these issues with the Pixel C are major. The two things you HAVE to get right on a tablet are the touchscreen and wireless internet ability. It is failing hard at both. I just have no idea how this passed quality control as a product for launch. It is like they didn't even test it.

The touch screen issues definitely seems like software. My note 10.1 2014 edition had some little touchscreen issues early on that were fixed by an update. The WiFi issue seems like a software issue but not 100% sure now. My upload speed is fine but download is bad when I am not close to the router. Very odd. Either way, the dev team has until around Jan. 22nd to fix this or mine is going back.

I completely understand if you don't want to use iOS - I was just referencing that 9.2 doesn't have bugs of this magnitude. I think every OS/platform/etc. has bugs, but what the Pixel C has are complete deal breakers. I don't see how you can have a wi-fi only touchscreen device that fails on the wireless and touchscreen fronts. The user should not have to do things like lock it in landscape mode, clear cache, etc. just to get it semi-stable. I fell in love with this device when I saw it back in September, but I will not be spending a single dollar on it until I know this is fixed - and I'm not sure it ever will be. I just don't have faith seeing as how they released it with such major issues.

As you said.. It is a bug. Or so we assume without any official word. They didn't make it with the thought of making this issue present since that would be bad for a WiFi only tablet.

Just remember to not jump on the bandwagon of a bug means they meant it that way or that they are doing nothing about it. No OS is perfect. I get you like iOS but they have had some major bugs in the past as well (remember the iPhone update that made the cellular part of the phone not work? I would say that is pretty big). The thing is they will work to fix issues. As for the other things that may not be bugs (such as how the OS performs) we can only hope they will listen to the feedback from the people using the device and make changes as necessary so we can have an awesome tablet.

If you want a tablet that works seamlessly get a Surface. I was so miffed by the Pixel's issues that I ran out and did the unthinkable and bought a Surface 3. No more mobile OS for me (except on my phone) until Google gets it's act together. The Surface is a full windows computer in a 10 inch form factor. It's exactly what I had hoped the Pixel would be. I got my refund from Google today. I actually saved money with the Surface against the Pixel. And the pen is great!

I love Android and iOS both. I'm not meaning that iOS has never had major bugs. I'm just saying that 9.2 doesn't currently have any bugs of this magnitude. And no, I don't think Google did this on purpose. But I do have trouble seeing how they didn't know at all. How could they not notice bugs like this during testing? I absolutely hope they get it fixed. I'd most likely pick one up down the road if they do.
