Smart lock problems after Android 10 update

I work from home and every morning I would do a phone restart and that set my Smart lock to work correctly for the rest of the day from my home and car. Since the Android 10 update Smart lock no longer works correctly. My morning restart does initially work, and Smart lock keeps my phone unlocked. At some point in time, Smart lock stops working and a double tap on my phone reveals a lock icon at the top of the screen and a message Device was locked manually. This happens on my home WiFi and in my car.

I setup my phone with a pin but have added a fingerprint because now I’m unlocking my phone 30+ times a day. Another phone restart does reset Smart lock working again but not for long. What phone setting drives the Lock icon and the Device was manually locked?

I’m on stock Android 10
No new apps have been downloaded
I’m not using a 3rd party launcher
Always on is off
I have a 1 minute screen timeout
I'm not using a screen saver
I do not use Do not disturb

Do you have it set to lock when the screen turns off?

If I'm in the right setting location Security/Screen Lock/Gear icon:
Automatically lock is set to two minutes. My options are Immediately - 30 minutes. It says, 2 minutes after sleep, except when kept unlocked by Smart lock. I don't know where the Sleep setting is.

I had this problem in the last beta and reported it and it was accepted as an issue. It still persists for me in this release. Smart Lock just doesn't work sometimes for me, which is particularly frustrating in the car which I have also had issues with Bluetooth connecting to some devices as well.

Smart Lock doesn't seem to work at all at my house now.

Don't worry, as someone else mentioned, they should have most of these 10 bugs worked out right before they release 11, then we'll get to do it all over again lol ;-)

Aside from a new Reddit post I've have not been able to find any other information about this problem. Thank you for reporting this issue during your beta testing.

I've found Smart Lock to be very inconsistent on every Android version, especially when using location as the option. Bluetooth is the only method that consistently worked for me. I have noticed improvement in Android 10. Not perfect, but better than Oreo and Pie.

Fingerprint unlock doesn't seem as strong for me after the update, even after cleaning it / restarts.

I think that this problem also messes with my phone notifications. When my phone rings all I see is a tiny phone icon right next to the clock in the top bar I don't get the popup phone banner across the screen.

...and my phone will not charge on my Google wireless charger. The phone says wireless charging and the battery icon shows charging but the Date/time/weather info slowly blinks on and ond off and the orange light in the charger base blinks until I unlock the phone. Once unlocked the phone will stay unlocked during wireless charging and other times it stops charging and starts flashing.

Smart Lock hasn't worked well for me since owning the Pixel 3XL, but it's even worse now since the update.

Pixel 3 XL user here.

I've been using stock android phones since 2010 or so. If I can recall correctly smart lock made its way onto the Nexus 4. It's never worked effectively as far as I know.
All my phones have been Google phones except briefly a OnePlus 5.

Smart lock is wholly unreliable. Even when paired with Bluetooth.

Disappointing. Especially when you consider that Google ought to have fixed it by now. I gave up somewhere along the line.

Thought I would see if others still had the problem. Of course they do.

I'm on a road trip and Smart lock has not worked anywhere, in my car, hotel wifi, family home wifi so I know it's not just my home wifi.
