SMS - Message Center?

I was looking at the settings for my Messaging app and noticed there is a Message Center setting. Anyone know what that is? Mine is a 312 phone number. I'm fairly new to Android so this is a little confusing to me and for what it is used for.

I believe this is the messaging center number associated with AT&T SIM cards. I have AT&T and have this number in my settings as well.
I think it's a way they can forward your messeges back and forth to you.
