SMS Not Present on Phone if it's OFF and Gear on ON

I use mysms as my default messaging app and I still receive the SMS on my Gear S.

You cant reply or initiate new messages on the watch if the phone is not using the Message app as default. You can only receive messages in the form of app notifications.

I initiate new messages on my watch by opening the messaging app and tap cancel when the reminder that it's not my default on my phone one. It's a bit of a work around but it works for starting a text from the watch. 5 Tiles sms app , on the watch, imports the entire conversations from my phone but its keyboard is hard to use so I just use it for short replies to older messages.
I hope Samsung doors a better job of importing the messages in the future than it currently does. It's pretty darn inconvenient the way it works now.
