SMS ringtone not working

Just got the 7 pro a couple weeks ago and have been trying to change the SMS ringtone and no matter what I change it to in the sounds l settings it will always ring as whatever I have as the default notification sound. Am I doing something wrong?

Safe mode worked. But that's because it changed my messages back to the oneplus default messaging app. I forgot to mention I've been using the android messages app as my default SMS. It appears the sound setting works only with the oneplus message app? The android messages app must just use the default notification sound.

How are you trying to change the notification tone for the Google Messages app? Go to Settings>Apps, select Messages, then Notifications. Then tap "Other Notifications" under the Other category. Tap Advanced, then Sound. Change the tone there. Now see if the correct tone plays.

No need to feel dumb -- the setting is actually buried quite a bit!
