SMS transfer in?

I've bought a G4 as a spare phone as my Samsung S6 is going in for a repair.
everything seems to have transferred over onto it via google automatic backup, from my S6 except the sms messages.
Does anyone have any idea why that might be, or know of any simple tool or method to transfer them over manually. Motorola migrate doesn't work on the newer versions of android?

Back up already done in google and samsung. I couldn't get that other one to work. Tried "transfer" facility on it, both with send and receive from both devices. Also got it to send a file which i think was an apk file, but when i tried to install thinking it had worked, the receiving phone said installation failed...

There's a number of apps on Playstore that profess to do the same, perhaps others may work?

Use SMS backup and restore app. Set a backup schedule to your Google drive, then when your phone is back, just restore the backup.
