so confused about rooting

I finally decided to root my evo 4G AND I AM SO CONFUSED. After looking into everything my root file is read only. My SD card is mounted already. All of my applications are apk as well. I know that my phone is under my husbands account and it has his name as the username under phone information. He has a HTC hero and when I look at his files and everything he has the exact same things I do. Is it possible he somehow put these on my phone or are they the same? When I try to see if the phone (my evo) is rooted it says no. I really need some help cause I really want to root my phone!!! Thank you!
