About to take the plunge and root my phone when a important thought popped in my head...i have to start fresh when i flash a new custom rom, and poof there goes my apps and settings. What is the easiest and seemless way to get my new rom working with my contacts apps and setting (that seems improbable though, settings is not a must). Any help guys? thanks again for this great support in the android community.

Titanium Backup is my tried and true, you can backup all your apps and app data and then restore them when you load up a fresh rom.

Contacts should already be backed up to your google account.

However, you can also export them to your SD card if you want to be sure.

Upon rooting, I think you pretty much need to bite the bullet and expect to spend some time setting things back up. Once you're rooted, you can use Titanium backup to restore everything in the FUTURE, but first round there'll be some rework.

Get an account on AppBrain and sync; that'll make it easy to reinstall all your apps.

Some apps sync against a website and your data will be downloaded once you reinstall and log on. 3banana does that with snaptics.com, Astrid tasks can be set up to do that with rememberthemilk.com Cardiotrainer links to a companion website.

Some apps save settings and data to your SD card, and will come right back the way they were when you reinstall. Tapatalk, Aldiko and SecForms work that way.

Some apps don't do it automatically, but will have a backup/restore menu option to let you write setting out to your SD card - for instance Doggcatcher does that.

I think a lot of your Sense settings (home screen setups, wall paper choice, etc) are toast. You'll just need to redo until you can use Titanium.

Bottom line: you won't loose everything by any stretch of the imagination, but you'll spend some time getting things back the way you like them.

But will my setting or info in my apps be toast because dont i have to wipe my phone to flash a new rom? or can i just copy my sd card to a folder in my computer and then put everything back on after i flash?

Your sd card isn't touched with a wipe

so i could import and export contacts or apps hypothetically? thanks again confused about the whole sd card thing all i knew was that its highly reccomended that you wipe you phone before flashing a new rom

When people talk about wiping your phone, that's the memory on the phone itself, NOT the sd card. So anything on your sd card is preserved and still available.

(That said, I like to periodically drag a copy of my sd card onto my computer just in case the phone was lost or the card failed, but that's just backup strategy - you can count on the sd card being around after you root).
