I used to switch phones every month when something new came out because it actually offered something different. I miss the times of the EVO OG launch, then the phones that followed. Now its more of the same. Specs to me are meaningless. If a phone runs daily without lagging, job well done. Software is barely even being altered or evolving. HTC M7 will get Sense 6 and what is it missing? The depth of field camera, and? Seems like very "meh" upgrades this year. From the s5 to the M8. I'm not even going to over hype myself on Apple. I've been rocking a 1020 for 3 months now, and am not even leaning slightly to get the s5 or the new One sadly. Last year I was all over the M7 and S4 though. / rant

The new HTC One has a Do Not Disturb mode, which makes it 10x better in my opinion as last year's model, since the lack of such mode is personally a deal-breaker for me. It is the reason why I bought the Moto X last year, before I found out the S4 had it too
I really don't like relying on 3rd party apps for this particular feature, because if the app force closes in the middle of the night and/or the OS decides to arbitrarily shut it down, and I miss an important call when I'm on call for work, that's my ***

I tend to agree. The pace has definitely slowed down but I guess that's to be expected. It happened with personal computers too.

I like the way it is now much better. 4 years ago, you really had to put a lot of thought into your choice. Now, they'll all just about the same and the difference from my phone from 2 years ago to the newest is small, but enough to warrant an upgrade. Switching phones is not fun to me at all so the fact that you pretty much "can't go wrong" these days is awesome.

As the proud owner of a Moto X I disagree that "Software is barely even being altered or evolving". IMHO the active notifications on the Moto X are a game changer that you can't fully appreciate until you have used it. At this point I can't see changing to a phone that doesn't have active notifications. The dot case seems to be a lesser implementation of this - and by adding a case you take away one of the great features of the M8 which is the metal body.

Well...I dunno, the market back in 2010 was definitely interesting, but I don't know that it was better in any way. More chaotic maybe. There were still Symbian phones, Palm was still around, Blackberry had more market share than it does now. But the big flagships that were super popular came down to the original Evo, the iPhone 3GS, The Droid Incredible, and the original Droid. Someone correct me if I'm forgetting anything as popular as those. The next year the Galaxy S II hit hard and got really popular despite being changed on every carrier, you get the HTC Thunderbolt, the Evo 3D, from my perspective at the time, while I was of course tempted by the sheer newness of the phones, there wasn't much there to upgrade for. I think the main thing that can be remembered as being cooler about 4 years ago was just OEM's trying to figure out what a really good Android phone should be, others trying to stay relevant like Palm and Blackberry, etc.. .

I know what you mean. It is what it is unfortunately. Can't imagine it's easy to do something groundbreaking when these things have a yearly release. Hell, apple gives their half *** new release iPhones the "s" add on lol. This HTC One is definitely a "One-s" Guess they couldn't do that so they just stuck with 'new One'. With that said, I still am addicted to switching phones very often lol. Had the old One then went to a 5s. Now I'm back. I feel like things will heat up a bit when we get a new HTC device, Galaxy S6?, and the iPhone 6.
On another note think about the struggle with naming devices. They release so often I can't imagine these manufactures counting up past 7 for their devices lol.
