Bringing wifey over from Verizon to Sprint so we can take advantage of that great family plan pricing. Do the new Hero's have 2.1 already installed?

Doubt it, when i got many a new pre, they all came with the factory os. And i needed to update myself. That being said, make them do it for you if it doesn't!

he might want to root it at 1.5 and install a useful ROM instead of the crap Sprint approved.

Only way to get 2.1 is to run the ruu.exe on windows cp or at store. Also like rufflez said you could root it and install a custom rom for her.

It's for the wife. She likes the smaller size of the Hero. Says the Evo is too bulky for her. She also doesn't really care for all the capabilities it has. Just wants a reliable phone, a few game apps, and good messaging capability.

As for me, I've already pre-ordered my Evo and anxiously await June 4.

We're trying to tell you the leak has problems, and that they aren't reversible. Too many people jump on it cause its approved, but in reality, it sucks. Ask what someone's uptime percentage is with the new leak. I can guarantee you it'll be around 100%. Also, some very nice apps aren't available in the market, and there is a process that is eating up the battery life and making the device run much slower than previous leaks. Thats 3 Major issues that aren't a problem on previous leaks.

Rooting the phone and flashing a custom ROM will allow your wife to enjoy the phone far more than using the release Sprint approved. Granted its for your wife...but even things such as phone lag and battery life (Which will definitely affect your wife directly) can be rectified by flashing a custom ROM rather than the Sprint release.

I agree...

Theres several choices in custom rom,almost anything is possible.Livewallpapers,custom themes,even just stock with a little extra.

my first android phone so i'm a touch bit confused on the benefits of rooting and whatnot...

I would say to try Beezys Kool-aid highmem, it has all the sprint apps and you can very easily back them up and/or remove them. When your ready to root and flash your first rom there are some great walkthrus here plus if you have any questions these guys are right on top with the answers.

The benefits just to name a few custom things backup/restore,wireless tether,remove unwanted apps. Heres one that is the same as the official but it was from a leak a few days before.lol

As for the earlier suggestion to ask the store you buy a hero from to install 2.1 for you...

Keep in mind this update is not OTA, it's OTW. And many chains and corporations don't set up computers to be able to download then install software. They're often run on special versions of windows and outdated versions of IE. The employees may be completely unable to install the update themselves.
