The social networking app/widget on the photon is actually pretty cool... the only thing that i don't like about it is that there's no way to view your notifications (facebook) - any idea how to do this?

Have you installed the Facebook app from the market? It offers many more features that the widgets, including viewing of notifications.

It wants an awful lot of permissions. Does Facebook really need to know where I am all day long?

I decided against downloading either the Facebook or the G+ apps due to permission bloat.

Well, if they have a "check in" feature, they do need to know where you are.

However, if you root, you can install LBE Privacy Guard, which allows you to approve/deny each individual permission when you install apps. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security&hl=en

I can't imagine why I'd want to check in and tell the whole world where I am. Thanks, if I ever root I will look into that.

I preferred the permissions model on the Pre, where you give instance-by-instance permission, so, for example, you can say, "give permission to this app for this session", but then the app has to ask again the next time it wants permission. Then, if I wanted to try "checking in" once, to see if I liked it or something,i could do that without Facebook tracking me forever after.

yeah i have the facebook app, i just like the social networking app because of the non-vanilla interface and flicking through status updates, plus the ease of adding comments and stuff. it's really pretty nice minus that one factor
