Software system modified LOCKED warning on HTC M8 problem

Hi All!

I'm having problems with my htc m8 phone.

I have the Software system modified LOCKED warning and can't get out of it.

I recently left the u.k. O2 network contract.
Just before that, I had the phone unlatched by O2 so I could use a Maltese vodafone sim.
From around that time I stared having "Settings has stopped" errors and now it's stuck in the Software system modified LOCKED screen. Any ideas? I contacted HTC U.K. and they coudnt help, except for me to bring it to get fixed.

I'd love to know the problem.

Welcome to the forums. Sorry about the delay. Were you the original owner of the device? Did you ever root the phone?

This was a replacement by my network provider (O2) as the previous phone was also stuck in the boostrap screen. I don't know whether the phone is brand new or refurbished. No, my present one is not rooted.

I would guess it is refurbished. There was probably no changes to the ROM and the person before you may have rooted it.

I would try contacting HTC and see what they say about flashing a stock ROM all over everything.

The problem is, I'm in Malta and will be for the time being.
Is this something I can do myself?

In theory, yes. What I have never been clear on is a situation like this...taking a phone from one region and flashing a different one on it. I have heard from conflicting sources, albeit for different OEMs, that it works and doesn't. That is why I suggested to contact HTC. They may be able to clear that question up.
