[Solved] Apps to SD, then change ROMs

I had ROM x (just to keep things simple, generic names) and I wanted to flash ROM y. No big deal.

I have Handcent for texting, and there are a lot of texts in there that I can't really afford to lose with the data wipe. Well I made the backup for ROM x and then moved Handcent to my SD Card so that nothing would change with the app when I did the data wipe. When I flash to ROM y, it's not comprehending that Handcent is on my SD Card. I have to re-download it and then I lose all my texts anyways; even if I do an app/data backup from Titanium, there are no texts.

Is this supposed to happen this way (impossible to transfer texts), or am I missing a step to get the Handcent from ROM x to ROM y with texts in tact?

Had the same issue. Best solution is this app:

https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.infolife.smsbackup

I have the pro version, but used free for a long time. Only way I can "restore" messages on phone. Another great app is SMS Backup and Restore.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync

This saves all your texts in a "chat" folder to your gmail account. For example, every SMS I get from Bari...open gmail. Go to folder labeled "chat"...(automatically put there when this app installs...) Find chat from Bari, and tap it. Threaded conversation comes up. Same with all texts from Rachel. (My two daughters...). This way, I save texts that are important, but don't need to keep them on phone.

With the first app I linked, if you restore something, all texts are restored. They also have a choice to just save texts from certain contacts as well. Must have apps in my book....

Let me know if these help. Oh....if you purchase Handcent services, they enable you to back up texts to their servers. I prefer them on my SD card....

Re: Apps to SD, then change ROMs

That first app you posted was exactly what I was looking for!!

I can't thank you enough :D

Re: Apps to SD, then change ROMs

If you use "MyBackup Pro" it will back up everything.....alarms, calendars, home screen, sms, mms, contacts, system settings (I don't pick that), dictionary......and if you are rooted, then you can back up the APK's and data also which means that you will save your game data, heytell data etc. I use SMS Backup and I like it, but with MyBackup....it takes care of that for me.

Glad the app helped. Doesn't My Backup Pro store info on their servers? Or does it save on SD card?

Re: Apps to SD, then change ROMs

Moving an app to the SD card won't help you retain all app info when switching ROMs. What that feature is really meant for is to allow you to conserve internal storage space...which was more of an issue with older Android phones, and not so much the Thunderbolt. Given the 2.25GB internal storage you have to work with, it's very unlikely that you'll run short of space to run apps. If you do, yeah, you can move some apps to SD card, but for best performance, I'd recommend not worrying about that at all.

I usually recommend using Titanium for app backup, and MyBackup for pretty much everything else. There is a guide I wrote on it stickied in this forum and can also be found in my signature.

My backup is great, hand cent also has it's own back up method.

It's through their servers though I thought, and I believe (not really sure) it's not free either.

Oh, I know all about the backups and stuff. Just was never in a spot where I HAD to retain a large number of texts when I flashed a new ROM. A combination of CWM/Titanium/SMS Backup & Restore seems to be exactly what I need!
