[SOLVED] help needed, replaced build.prop & phone won't start up

Re: help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now

Lol...between the EVO LTE I bought (and returned) and the GS3, I have almost 80gb.

I think we're covered.

Superb! Did you find the folder? Like Paul said, you can zip it up and upload it or upload it right from Root Explorer/similar file explorer apps.

Yep...uploading it now. 1.08gb.

Looks like it might take a bit.

Good luck guys... We will hang by and check in from time to time....

Re: help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now

how big is the nandroid backup?

Worst case take 7 zip and just Zip/Compress the file... That should compress it with 7zip's stock settings by at least a good 60-75% of original size...

That would then make the upload and download easier for both of you... Then when he downloads the file, unzip/extract it before placing it in his clockwork/backup/ directory to restore in CWM.

I've had to do this many times when uploading an Odin tar file (Which is what we use on Samsung devices...) they are normally about 200+ megabytes for the factory restore image so it compresses it to a nice 150-160 megabytes....

Mediafire & Mediashare both have 200 megabyte file size limits along with many other free file hosting services.. So the "zipping" option is a nice workaround to fit those bigger files ;) Yes this isn't my first rodeo .... LOL

Dang it...didn't read your post before I started uploading.

I will definitely do that in the future, though!

Superb.

hiero/zharris - from your end, do you know what you have to do?

[INFO]
  1. Download from the Dropbox link
  2. If zipped, unzip it.
  3. Place that file on your SDcard in the backups folder (which itself is within the clockwordmod folder). I believe this folder should be, in theory, "/sdcard/clockworkmod/backups" or something to that effect.
  4. Boot into Recovery (ClockworkMod, unless Zeus hates you and your recovery is gone).
  5. Go to restore and choose that folder.
  6. Wait, wait, wait. Pray a bit if that's your thing, have a cigarette or a drink or something.
  7. Hopefully reboot into awesomeness.

Question: Apparently the only CWM for the galaxy s3 right now isn't the touch version. Therefore you can access your external SD card from recovery. If we can't get to our external SD is there another way we can do this? Via adb shell or Odin? Or do we have to just wait for CWM touch to be available for the s3?

Re: help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now

If that's the case then I will probably download it first thing tomorrow morning if that is OK with you.

That will work...it has about another 50 minutes on the upload anyway. Shoot me an email address when you get a chance so that I can send you a Dropbox link.

Odin is not my ball game, Paul's much better with that. You CAN adb push it though, at least in theory.

But, if there's an external SDcard (and there is, right? Sorry it's late lol) you can always pop that in another device and load it through there. I can't tell you how many phones my DINC unbricked by doing that, but it's probably near the teens lol

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think you NEED the touch version. The difference is that you'll have to navigate CWM with your volume and power buttons (up/down to move through menus, power to select the highlighted option).

Oh, and as dmmark suggested, I too would load the nandroid right onto the SD card directly.

Correct. However, the non-touch version is a massive pain in the neck, or at least it was on my phone.

Also, when you get a chance--flash TWRP. It's awesome :).

But...I should not be filling your minds with such temptation before the phone is back and alive, so ignore that for now!

Thanks for the replies. However my issue wouldn't be getting the file onto the SD card itself. The issue is getting the galaxy s3 CWM to read the SD card once it is loaded onto the s3. The difference with the touch version is that it gives the option of reading the external or internal SD cards where the regular cwm only reads the internal SD card. I hope I am wrong about this but wanted to see if anyone else had run into this.

I see zharris's problem, looking at the CWM menu listing now:

- reboot system now
- install zip from sdcard
+choose zip from sdcard (I don't see any external sd card in the file system, even after I mount the external card from 'mounts and storage')
+apply /sdcard/update.zip
+toggle signature verification
+toggle script asserts
+go back
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- backup and restore
+backup
+restore
+advanced restore
+go back
- mounts and storage
- advanced

Sorry I can't be of much more help on the CWM guys. Not knowing what exactly the setup is for the SGSIII it's hard to say...

TWRP recovery as dmmarck mentioned isn't even available yet for you guys but when it is, that is what I would switch to for your custom recovery.

One option to move it into the internal storage is use the Mounts and Storage option in CWM. Then you can connect your device to your computer via USB and transfer the file to the internal storage or wherever your CWM directory is on the SGSIII.

Re: help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now

I pulled the backup that I made for you guys from my internal SD...that's where CWM had it stored by default. I restored my original from the same place, so assuming that you can access that, it should work.

downloading now! absolutely bow down to UL for this!!

unfortunately, it seems that the USB driver is failing on my computer for some reason...

I'm going to try to do a fresh install on my desktop and see if it will see the phone as a drive I can access....

I believe Paul was in it first. Regardless, this is what the Android community and Android Central is all about. :)
