[SOLVED] help needed, replaced build.prop & phone won't start up

after reading this saga I was definitely shocked by a couple things: 1) all of this was completed successfully in 1 day and 2) that I was still reading and not turning off my tv after some drama. I was not surprised by the support (as quick as it was) of the Community. Really great outcome. Congrats to all!

Good job everyone... Man this was quite a quick crash course in learning the ins and outs of CWM/ADB/Nandroids/Drivers..

Fun isn't it? LOL.... You guys got thru this you can do anything now.. :)

Remember those Nandroids guys... I suggest making one and throwing an extra copy on your computer for safe keeping.

Re: help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now

OMG. It's done, I have recovered!!!!! :confused::eek::cool:

OK, the process was WAY more painful than it should have been, but again, my fault.

HUGE thank you to everyone on this thread who pitched in! With such a quick response too! AMAZINGLY responsive forum!

And A HUGE THANK YOU TO UNCLE LOUIE.

So I ended up figuring out that if you just turn the phone on normally and let it get past the 'Samsung Galaxy S III' screen to a blank screen, if you plug a USB cable in, it seems to actually connect to the computer. Unfortunately, it does NOT connect to the computer via normal windows USB connection and it does not show up as a drive.

Fortunately, I downloaded and installed ADB and installed the platform tools to get ADB functions enabled (I also installed the google USB drivers, but unsure if that helped or not). Once I had that, I thought I would just try to connect the phone and try a adb push of Uncle Louie's recover folder. Sure enough, IT WORKED.
Unfortunately, I uploaded it to the root instead of the proper /SDCARD/clockworkmod/backup folder! DOH. And yet again, unfortunately, I kept accidentally pushing the 'recover' button on the stupid CWM interface. What ended up happening? You can guess I hope, I RAN OUT OF SPACE. UGH.
So eventually I figured I'd just push to one of the existing backup folders and have it replace the files there. That worked and then the CWM recovery went through perfectly!

Now I'm back and setting up my phone again, but that's not so bad!
It's late and if I'm forgetting anything, I'll come back tomorrow and update. zharris24, I'm here if you need help with the process!

I need one too the beats audio installer messed up my phone and format system makes it just stick on that galaxy s 3 screen

Can you still get into Clockwork recovery?

Re: [SOLVED] help needed, replaced build.prop & phone won't start

yea I can still get into CWM and Odin mode. Just can't install cm9 Rom or install the update SPH_LF9_to_LG2 that I used to update the stock firmware. I used team epic root from recovery in CWM to gain root access. Problem is the beats audio installer app updated today and I tried installing it and it seemed to work, but when I went to restart using the phones restart option the phone froze for five minutes till I pulled the batt. Started it backup and every time it would seem to stall on the Samsung logo boot animations after the SGS3 screen and the sprint screen. CWM failed to let me flash the stock Rom update zip from my phone so I tried wiping data and then formated system. Now can't get past the galaxy s3 screen just sits on it. I tried using Odin to flash the 10mb sprint stock tar and didn't seem to make a difference.

sorry for long explanation. Tried to be thorough.

Re: [SOLVED] help needed, replaced build.prop & phone won't start

any luck anoosh?

I just thought I would add how I resolved this issue for myself. ;)

PREREQUISITE: Device must be set to use "USB debugging". (I'm not sure of any way to do this without it.)

I changed the "ro.board.platform" field in my tablets build.prop file (bad I know), which made my system boot to a blank screen after the android logo.

Here are the steps I used to restore the build.prop settings.

1. Download android developer kit.

2. Connect tablet to (in my case I used a Mac) computer via USB Cable.

3. Boot tablet to "blank" screen.

4. Open Terminal and enter the following commands.
* cd /path/to/adb
* ./adb root #runs adb as root.
* ./adb devices #lists all connected devices, confirm your device is listed. If it is not, try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB Cable.
* ./adb shell #allows you to run a remote shell interactively.
* su #enters su.
* mount -o remount rw /system #mounts /system as rw.
* cd /system #puts you in the system directory of your device.
* ls -all #lists all the files in your devices /system directory. Look for a backup file of build.prop. If one exists, look at it's contents with less.
* less build.prop.bak #shows the contents of your backup build.prop file (the name of this file may very).

5. If you have a backup of your build.prop (and its' contents are correct), you can restore it using the following commands. If you do not have a backup, you will have to edit the file using vi (see step 6).
* mv build.prop build.prop.bad #renames build.prop.
* mv build.prop.bak build.prop #restores your backup of build.prop (replace build.prop.bak with your backup file name. If there is a space in the name, type \ before the space and hit tab. It should auto complete).
* exit #until you are back to your computers adb directory.

6. If you don't have a backup of your build.prop file, you will have to edit it with vi.
* vi build.prop #edits the file using vi (you will have to google how to edit this file with vi if you don't know how; I'm not doing a tutorial on vi :P).
* exit #until you are back to your computers adb directory.

7. Reboot your device! You should be back in business!!!

8. Enjoy!
:)

Hi, i have similar to problem. When i starting phone he lagg. I changed build.prop and now cant start phone... :( I need help please give me change to fix. I have phone: ZTE Grand X

Will it boot into recovery mode? (I don't know how to do this on the ZTE, you'll have to search for that information.) If you can boot into recovery, choose Factory Reset and you should be able to recover.

I havent CWM recovery, so i cant back up or restore i have only android recovery mode (i dont know name for this)
Is there any way to fix? Or not?

Even with the stock recovery, there should be a factory reset option, which should bring back the original build.prop.

Have you tried a factory reset?

Not i dont tried a factory reset. How can factory reset, when cant start phone???
Or how can recovery stock rom? When i havent cwm recovery? I have only android recovery mode, but here is not back up or restore. Here can only wipe data and cache and install zip from sd card, but when i install last week rom (last week my mobilework normal), so installing failed, but i can try it again now.

:( For recovery need USB method: Connect to pc software and this can do only when phone start i think :( So now i cant do nothing?
I 1x do CWM recovery, but after cant go to recovery. Here is change i have recovery, but i dont know how go to recovery. :(

I'm sorry, I don't know how to start recovery on the ZTE. Every phone manufacturer seems to have it's own method.
