[Solved] How to activate special characters on the keypad?

Whenever I hold down a key, the "a" key in this instance, I get that pop up to type other special characters; however each time I try to swipe over those other characters to select them, it doesn't work... instead every time I hold down that "a" key, all I get is that first "a" in gray.... is there a way to activate the other selections please? If so... how do you go about it please? Thanks

I feel really retarded now cause I didn't think of restarting my phone prior to posting the question on here. Andddddddddd guess what? I restarted my phone out of frustration cause it was also screwing up the time of message sent & received, and it works now by swiping over the different selections.... Sorry to bother you all D:
