I’ve been receiving the message, “Some apps or processes are overloading the system ( CPU) and must restart”, since July 4.

Battery drain has been about 39% - 50%, overnight while sleep. Is dead in the morning if I go to sleep with 39%. Is half drained after a full charge before sleep.

No problem during the day. Ive cleared app cache, wiped partition. I don’t have social media or gaming apps on phone.

Started after I installed android message app, but I uninstalled on the 5th and I’m still receiving this error.

Android System is the highest % of battery usage. Sometimes it gets up to 59%. Tried toggling between its ability to allow background usage. No difference. Same issue.

Have had the phone since mid-March and has been working week; no battery/charge issues.

Does it also happen in Safe Mode? https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-37190. This can help narrow the problem down to something you installed vs something with the system. Even though Android System is showing as the top battery user, some other app might be responsible for utilizing one of the system components.

Open the battery in settings and see what is using all that battery overnight.

Trying this now. Of course my battery is at full charge because when I woke up at 4am it was dead (went to sleep at 11p, with 40ish%. I plugged in at that time.

Answered that in my original post. Android system is listed as highest (45% or higher) over the last few days. Everything else is 6% (screen on) or less.

The excessive battery drain only happens overnight. Wake up and battery is dead, so cannot check til I have some juice.

I’ve been in safe mode all day. The highest use of battery is still “Android System”. At 7:32pm, my battery is at 55% and android system has used 22% and climbing. Yesterday (non safe mode) it was at 40ish% around the same time. The quickest drain is over night so I’ll see what happens in the next few hours.....

Any other suggestions or possible answers?

I'll make the suggestion that I'd follow at this point. I would do a full factory reset. Bit of a process, but usually corrects inexplicable battery drains for me. And this one is hard to understand...never see the Android usage that high here. Remember that when you do a full factory reset, all your data and accounts are removed from the phone. I wouldn't use a backup after doing the reset unless it was made before you had all the battery drain problems...manual restore is best, but if you backup your phone with smart switch, you might have a backup that you can restore that's old enough.

Aha! I just installed the Android messaging app the other day and have been seeing this same thing as well. I came here looking for a solution. I really hadn't thought of that app being the culprit since it's official Android stuff. Bu bye Android messaging. Back to MightyText.

Ok, so....... 22 hours 47 minutes later (all in safe mode):

Battery @ 16% with 4h27m estimated battery life
Android system: 36%
Email: 9%
Android OS: 8%
Phone idle: 7%
Cell standby: 4% - not surprised as cell service in master bed is blah
Screen: 4%
Google play services: 4%
Chrome: 2%
Security & privacy vzw: 2%
Samsung push service: 1%

Think I found the issue. Samsung’s device maintenance program/app (the one sending me the pesky notification) could actually be draining my battery. I was down to 73% battery just 3 hours after a full charge. It used 42% of my battery. Can’t completely uninstall, but turned off its ability to use background data. Also downloaded gsam battery monitor

Folks on reddit said they have had the same/similar issues with the device maintenance app on the s8.

Aaaahhhh! I see. Wasn’t aware. I previously upgraded from an S6, so I didn’t have this app. I don’t see where it says what company it’s “powered by”. I’m going to look into it.

On a better note: Went to sleep with 39% (10pm-ish) and woke up to 31% (4:15am-ish). That means it has to be Samsung’s Device Maintenance app. That’s the only thing changed that has worked. Last full charge yesterday at 9am-ish and regular use throughout the day.

Not going to take the time to read through all the post but something I've learned that I haven't seen elsewhere is the ability to find the battery drain culprit on an unrooted phone. "Battery usage" is convenient for giving the bigger picture but it does not break down "android system" or "android OS." The better way to see what is taxing the CPU is looking at "memory" under "device maintenance." You have the ability to see what percent of the CPU is being used almost real time by all the services running on your phone. Some rogue service within android can be found and dealt with.

In my case, the culprit was Goggle Calendar. The CPU usage was a constant 2.5+% at all times. Knowing this, I started using a different calendar without issue. I thought it was the widget at first but then it continued after removing.

I was to the point of replacing the battery until I noticed that the mAh matched up well with what my battery should hold (3000mAh). I'm glad I didn't!!!

@ImGone71 - Wow, thanks for the tip! In my case, the AAA app (Automobile Club) is using 2-3% CPU, even after I turned off its ability to use background data - going to uninstall and see if that clears things up.
