all the usb drivers have been installed, im on 4.1.2 and in download mode, open odin and on the ID:COM it has turned blue.
Is this correct as i have heard its meant to turn yellow, in the bottom left hand corner it has a code like 0/005 then 'added'
Help please im worried ill mess my phone up.

well i went ahead with it and everything is fine, however i havent got a root?
i went into odin with usb debugging on, in download mode, odin showed my idcom and was blue and said added. added the cf root pda, clicked start and it came up with the green pass which i thought was brilliant and so it booted as normal. Then however my home screen started to flicker and was unusable, restarted the phone and seems to be fine but i have downloaded about 3 root checkers and they all say im not rooted even when i got the green pass in odin, what has happened?

Everything you did sounds perfect mate. All i can say is try again or try a different programme or download from a different site (the rooting programme, not odin)
Good luck bro. Usualy the green pass is a YES!

I dont have your phone so i cant address the rooting methods.. but the new versions of odin turn blue not yellow. Color in the box doesnt matter as long as it addresses a com port

Edit: When you go the the app drawer do you see a SuperUser app or an app that says SU?

Okay well here is the website that I downloaded odin and thr files and followed the tutorial, http://genius-tips.com/how-to-root-xxell4-android-4-1-2-on-galaxy-s3-i9300/

The thing is the root didnt work when I was on I9300XXELL4 but now I am on XXELLA

If you are simply trying to root your I9300 why don't you try this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35512626
[ROOT EXPLOIT+PATCH][2012.12.19] ExynosAbuse APK v1.40 should be much easier
