But what is the difference between tethering and mobile hot spot, or are they synonymous?

Hotspot is merely wireless tethering?

Mobile hot spot usually means that the tethering is wireless, which is what you can do with FroYo. Tethering, the way I use it anyway, is when you share your phone's connection with a computer via USB.
