Sound profiles not working

During the day I set my phone to vibrate only by pressing and holding the power on button and selecting the vibrate only function. At the end of the day I repeat but this time select sounds. However recently I'm finding that the notifications remain muted so I don't hear new emails for example. I have to manually change the volume of notifications. Anyone else experiencing this?
