Speaker acting weird during phone calls

When I place or answer a phone call and tap the speakerphone right away, sounds comes from the speaker for a split second, but then goes away. If I turn off speakerphone and turn it back on after that, it works just fine. The speaker works just fine in all other apps. Thoughts of why it would cut out when first turned on during phone calls?

Corrupt (or buggy) firmware.

Is there anything I can do to fix that or is that something that would be pushed to the phone via my carrier, Verizon in this case?
