If no one else mentioned it ... Go into settings > sound > system. Increase the system sound to the max, then adjust all the others to what you want. The system sounds is a baseline for all other sounds.
yes the droid x sound is less than stellar but i think its so the speakers don't blow out... As far as the alarm not waking you up try the option use increasing volume because to me it seems as if it gets louder then normal with that option also go check your settings make sure that you have notifications all the way up because stock mine were at 50% not a huge difference and no where near as loud as my Dinc is but loud enough...
