Speculating on buying a Galaxy S II 4g

I am speculating on buying the Galaxy S II 4g for ATT and have found myself curious about the costs.
I am not dishing out money for a data plan and only have the unlimited sms and calling plan. I read that the GSII 4g doesn't require a data plan. I am wondering if the upgrade from my 3g SIM card to a 4g one will add any sort of extra monthly cost to my monthly bill (besides the costs of upgrading to the phone itself).

Smartphone. I'm pretty sure it requires a data plan.

You must get a data plan.

Soon after you use the device on the AT&T network via a Sim, you will receive a text message telling you they have applied a smartphone data plan to your account.
