Is there a speed dial option setup that I cannot find ?

The DROID does alot of cool stuff, but it seems to be lacking simplicity in comparison to some features on basic cell phones.

Another issue I am having, say I want to call a contact whose name starts with T can I jump to the T's or do I have to scroll from A-T ???

You can set shortcuts on the desktop to call favorites, just long press click shortcuts, then direct dial. I put mine all in a folder for speed dials. As far as scrolling down the list once the list is up press the menu button then search and start typing. The list will shorted by all contacts that have that string in them.

You gotta be kidding me. About the only phone that didn't have speed dialing built in was the first Moto Brick. The Droid is great, except as a phone. The phone interface and options are worse than terrible. No speed dial. No place to type a contact! and select it. Gimme a break. To find workarounds for this just shouldn't be.

I use the Droid more as a computer then a phone, most of my communication is through text, email, IM, and FB so the Droid is perfect for me. I make less then 20 calls per week and those calls are to only 5 different contacts which I just have set as favorites.

I don't have too much trouble scrolling through actually. I have 500+ phone contacts, even more in the "contacts" section since I synced FB. I find that I can get around quickly enough by grabbing the tab on the right hand side of the contact list and scrolling to the letter. If it's a name I know is closer to the top then I'll just flick scroll like normal. Also, I've set up my favorites tab pretty well.

Yup .... you can also use the search button since that is what its there for but I myself forget about it lol. Without staring contacts or making shortcuts for speed dial and put them in a folder or on screen its pretty hard to make a touch phone have speed dial .... do you want a gesture action for it? haha ... but seriously the search works nice and quick.

Ah, the search button which has been ignored until now. Perhaps that's what I'm after. Right in front of me. Thanks folks.

an option

grab the app called speed dial. As you type in letters it gives you a list of contacts that match the letters you input. You can select the contact right from that list and dial it. For instance...if I want to call my wife...I type 9433 (corresponding to WIFE) and it brings up her contact info and I can call her.
I know it's not exactly what the OP was talking about, but I find it works great for me.

i use either the search button or the tab on the side. making a folder on your desktop with contacts you want to dial quickly is about as easy as speed dial in my book...

I think favorites is better than quick dial, because you can do whatever from there. Text, phone email etc. You can also have more than 10.
Also in contacts you just start typing the name of whoever and it will go to that name, tap the icon and then select what function you want to perform.
It is all there just need to be educated on how to use it

You can make a shortcut folder containing starred contacts (favorites) on your desktop as well. ;)

But unless you open the keyboard, there's no place TO type which would open the onscreen keyboard...so I don't get that option.

Yeah, thanks. I am getting that. And it works well. I guess I'm used to Takephone in the Palm where you started typing from your home page and it started kicking up matches in database...select and send. I'll have to see what Takephone is doing in Droid. They have a program, just don't know what it does. And I'm reluctant to give up the built in home pages...

Thanks, all, esp. Curt...funny how the little things bug you the most sometimes. Yes, you can search right from Home page, enter a couple letters and there you are. As it should be.

Now, for an easy to find brightness control....
