Why do Sprint users pay top dollar plus a premium data charge when we have the same 3g speeds as boost, virgin, and assurance wireless. I understand we have unlimited data and subsidized plans but the savings pay for themselves if your on a mvno but it burns me up inside knowing our bill is 220$ when we can have the exact same service with another provider that still uses sprints network. I could care less what phone I'm using as long as it works to make calls, texts, and browse the internet. Please chime in and let me know what you think of this, I for one am disgusted about it.

Lte network & carrier roaming agreements. You can save A lot if money on prepaid, like any national carrier.

I believe insurance, customer service, and being able to upgrade phones at a discounted price also plays a part. Sure, you can go to an mvno with the same type of calling/data quality, and but will be able to replace your phone when/if you lost it or its stolen? When you go prepaid, you pay for the whole phone up front with no type of insurance.

After 2 or so years, will you be able to upgrade to a new phone for less than msrp price? The iphone on virgin Mobile cost about $400, you can get a Sprint Iphone for ALOT cheaper than that, even a used sprint iphone on craigslist Is about 50% cheaper than that.

So that's just my 2 cents :)

Sprint bill for 3 androids (small discount included) ~ $180/mth

Boost Mobile with 3 androids using the same network (Slightly less due to no roaming but coverage is 90% with and without roaming due to Sprint's prls which forces the phone on even the weakest Sprint signal to avoid roaming) = $165 (Reduced by $15 every 6 months until $120)

The first two years will be relatively break even, mathematically, considering the cost of the phone and service and possible etfs.

Sprint = $180 x 24 + $36 x 3 upgrade or activation fee + $200 x 3 average cost of subsidized phone = $4320 + $108 + $600 = $5028 for 2 years

Boost = $3420 for 3 phones for 2 years (taking into account for shrinkage) + $370 x 3 (SGS2 phone cost) = $4530

Savings in the first 2 years with three lines = $498

Savings after shrinkage at maximum (assuming $370 x 3 purchase every 2 years) = $1038 every two years.

Monthly savings ~ $43

Gabejr,

Would you go to ting.com (a Sprint MNVO) and using your data and minutes history,
run the savings calulator...then tell us what you come up with?

You mean a lte network that is inoperable in all but a few states. Sprint is going way to slow with their lte upgrade imo. They could contract someone else for outside help but we may end up with another wimax fiasco.

Apparently having 3 phones running 5gb of data a month average each ting isn't going to save me any money...

My calculations for my savings through boost is still the best value.

Upgrading a phone at discounted price isn't a privilege for choosing non-prepaid carrier. It's an incentive because the result of choosing a cheap phone is a 2 year contract.

I never said that buying the phone at a discounted price was a privilege. The OP asked why do sprint customers stay with instead of a Sprint MVNO. Great customer service, insurance, and discounted phone prices are a few of the BENEFITS of staying/going with Sprint instead of their own or other MVNOs. I was stating them as benefits, not privileges.

Privilege might have been the wrong word to use and for that, I'm sorry.

I would partly disagree with the benefit although I get where you're coming from. You commit to an additional contract when you are able to select a new phone at a discounted price (renewal). IMHO, I don't see that as a benefit. I would agree that always having a chance at getting a cutting edge phone, at a discount every 2 years would be a benefit. Hell, being able to get a cutting edge phone at any price is a benefit compared to Virgin USA.

I'm on VM and will probably move back to Sprint in a couple months. Why? because I like new technology phones. I have the Optimus V on VM and while it's been tweaked to be one of the most solid Android phones I ever had, I would like nothing more than to be able to have the option of buying even a Nexus S or Galaxy S II at full price.

Sprint, along with all the other post paid carriers, artificially inflate the prices of their no contract full price phones. Samsung GS2 from Sprint (10/10/12): $500. Same exact phone from Boost (10/10/12): $370. There is no hardware difference between these phones yet Sprint will sell you the same thing for $130 more.

The only downfall is you'll be one year behind technology wise but lately being one year behind isn't that big of a deal.
