Sprint Note 3: KitKat impressions, let's post them here.

Re: Kit Kat impressions, let's post them here.

I can't even get mine to work. I've tried turning on and off the setting that's supposed to wake it up when the screen is off and no good. I'm going to try a factory reset and see if I can get my phone to start acting like the rest of yours after this update.

I haven't tried over wifi yet, but wired, and through both the stock file manager and ES, it is working the same as on jelly bean for me. Is your problem only occurring over wifi?

Well, if I use a USB cable to connect my phone and computer, there's no problem -- I can modify the SD card at will. If I try to use ES File Explorer to do the same sort of thing over WiFi, it fails. However, ES File Explorer is also unable to copy files from internal phone memory to the external SD card correctly, but does seem to be able to delete files that are already on the card. This seems to be a result of the new rules KitKat introduced for third-party app access to the memory card. The only app I've managed to find so far that provides a partial work-around for non-rooted devices is FX File Explorer; see the app's XDA thread for more info. It has an experimental option under file management that, in my quick tests, allows writing of files but not folders on the SD card; not perfect, but some ability is better than none, and perhaps the dev will figure out how to get folder operations to work as well.

I just tried a few things...

renamed a photo in phone memory and then moved it to SD card, name and file intact. Could not rename it on SD card.

Moved file (photo) from SD card to phone, no problem. Again could not rename photo on SD card.

Could not create new folder, notification said folder created successfully but it did not appear in either 0 or external SD.
I'll play around with this more tomorrow. But honestly, I really only use it to clean up stray files and delete stuff that I don't need any longer. As long as it does that, for me it's ok. But I can see the new limitations and that they do hinder SD management.

I had no problem moving my music from my SanDisk flash drive to the sd card.

I guess how much the SD card permissions will affect you depends on how you use your SD card. In a bit more testing, I've found things similar to msndrstood -- file writing works at least sometimes, folder writing generally doesn't, deleting seems fine. ES File Explorer might actually be OK with writing files. Its note editor can't seem to open them properly, at least in my tests, while other apps could. That may have fooled me into thinking the files weren't copying correctly when they may have been. But still, I think it's clear that there are changes to SD card writing for third-party apps. I'm keeping an eye out for apps and app updates that may help get around the issue without needing root.

So far, battery seems better, opening apps seems snappier- - no problems. The only bad thing I noticed was some archived emails on Gmail were deleted on my N3. I recovered them from my desktop Gmail though, so no net loss!!

Did a full wipe and now it seems faster but the batter still drains faster and I am no longer getting picture mail or hangouts.

I did the update last night, and first thing I notice was I couldn't unlock the screen by touch, I had to use the S-Pen (this was fixed with a reboot). Next thing is my notification /status bar is not transparent. Something I was really looking forward to having. The camera also seems to be a bit slower loading from both the lock screen and the camera icon. And finally, so far, my N3 won't wake up with "Hi Galaxy" anymore. Has anyone else noticed these issues. Also I've restarted the Note, 4 times and took the battery out once, no change in issues. I'm afraid I may have to factory reset, and I'd hate to do that.

I'm new to the forums, to Samsung, and this is my first Galaxy phone.

I love my Note 3... Just not to fond of KitKat at the moment.

I had the same problem and this fixed it:

Open S-Voice, go to settings, turn OFF "Wake up command" & "Voice wake-up, restart phone, go back to S-Voice, turn ON "Wake up command" & "Voice wake-up.

This worked for me, good luck.

NOLA area. Updated a few hours ago. Not automatic, had to physically search for update. No big changes to effect usage. Keyboard a tad different. A few minor changes in the settings. Long pressing home has a change in the far right button. There's a little garbage can to close recent apps. All minor things so far.

I have an odd problem with the update. I use a live wall paper with floating butterflies and a background picture I pick. Now it won't take the picture. I also tried a fish one. Something changed that these wallpapers are looking for.

I had the same issue with touch not working after update...but the s pen did so I was able to restart.

So far I like the upgrade...it fixed a few bugs that really bothered me. (Papryus would crash when exporting to Drive when used in a pen window).

I am having a major issue when calling my Sprint S4...fFirst try it calls but is silent...2nd try works fine...very frustrating. I am hoping once the S4 gets it's Kitkat this issue will be fixed!

Funny my Note 3 is at Kitkat but my S4 hasn't received it's update.

The pen window functions better and has a nice blue lining to it. Also added a few more default pen window options and the menu can be edited!

Chrome works much better in Kitkat...plays embedded videos easier.

Neat easter egg...tap the android version 4.4 in the about menu...then spin the icon right and you well get a strange colorful, interactive board with various Screenshots_2014-03-01-01-52-05.jpgScreenshots_2014-03-01-01-52-38.jpgicons!

Anyone notice we didn't get the dialer update? I mentioned this in my post, but no one has commented/responded to this. Still have curiosity. Probably because of touch wiz?

Palm Treo line > BlackBerry line > Samsung Galaxy S line > NOW the awesome & powerful Samsung Galaxy Note 3! 😆📱😆

Can everyone post their 'Android System' percentage? Mine is usually at 14%, this is about double what it was on JB. Just curious at what everyone else is seeing with their system.

You're right. My Google services was running at 8-10% before the kitkat update. Now it is worse at 20-25%. I thought this was going to improve?

I am holding out on doing a factory reset, I really don't want to do it but I would if it would improve battery life. Nothing else is quirky except for this. I'm wondering if it's jacked up because there is tighter memory management in KK and the system is monitoring/working more. I could be talking trash for all I know, just trying to put the puzzle together.

Re: Kit Kat impressions, let's post them here.

My connection is spotty now and not as steady as before. I've removed my battery, updated my profile and PRL but it continues to be spotty at best. The 4G signal in the notification panel blinks on and off and is almost always off. Where it used to take me seconds to download things now takes longer IF it does it at all, I have the "loading loop" and usually have to switch to my wifi IF I am at home. Other than that, everything seems ok.
