Sprint Samsung Epic 4g Official Froyo EC05 [update.zip method/Custom Odin Packages]

My only gripe is when you go into your call log it now shows the messages and the call history all mixed into one. If you sent 20 messages since your last call you now have to scroll through all of them to get to the last call.

im going to bed a happy camper tonight :-) no more impatiently waiting for the update! i just cant believe i did it myself without messing up my phone!

i didnt like launcher pro and go launcher was amazing but it killed my battery. i heard that running froyo you could change your dock

So you going to wait for your OTA Keith or you going to do the manual method? The world is waiting.... ;)

Sorry, I've been watching you sweat this out now for a few months now...

Sweat it out? Really?

At the beginning of the year I was anxious and thinking very seriously about rooting and loading froyo. But that was because all the lock ups and auto restarts I was having. After I replaced my phone and found out how stable my phone was I never complained about eclair again.

I watched the upgrade to EB13 unfold, all the while stating I will wait until the OTA. When it was pulled I didn't complain as I was happy with eclair specially after hearing all of the issues.

I know I could have installed EB13 using the windows update as a matter of fact I still have both they'd filed and update program on my computer if I chose to install it.

I also know I can change a file name to updated.zip, copy it to the root and boot into recovery.

What I can't do is fix it when it goes wrong. I will not ever do anything on my phone or computer that requires going into or entering anything in the command prompt. Until there is a point and click way forget it.

Like I said, I am perfectly happy with eclair and would probably be happy with eclair for two more years.

Manual update

seriously I live in Chicago and i STILL have not gotten it pushed to me. IT is starting to make me mad.

Why don't you manually update it?

I bit the bullet and did the manual update by downloading/renaming the update to update.zip, placed it on my SD card, and about 5-10 minutes later was running Froyo EC05. Took very little effort.

Rooted the phone using the methods described in these forums. Everything appears stable. Personal settings were unchanged (I did backup prior to installation).

Once we have a deodexed ROM version available we have a patch we can apply from previous Froyo versions to fix this.

First... Did you rename the file in windows explorer, "update" ? I stressed this in OP that you can't rename it as "update.zip" or it will give you "update.zip.zip" as a filename.

Second, must be placed on the root directory. When you connect via cable to computer and select mass storage , usually Windows will prompt you to open with Windows Explorer to view the files. The directory it opens, thats your "root" directory...

The launcher dock apps? Applications from Launcher>Menu Button>Select Edit> then you will see the icons highlighted you can drag and drop them to the launcher dock to switch them out. Just hit your home key when your happy with your changes. Done.

Has anybody got this to install with eb13???

This update.zip is only for users on Eclair 2.1 (DI18). You will have to use Odin to go back to Eclair 2.1 (DI18) to use this update.zip.

Sounds good Keith, just checking in with you... :p

Used Odin to go from EB13 back to DI18, ran the update, then was getting errors telling me either my google account had changed or I entered a wrong password. Started getting force closes too. Odin'd back to DI18 again and tried once again and no errors this time.

Noticed that the "error" that it wouldn't automatically download app updates has been fixed.

wow, just bricked my epic while trying to odin to stock. damn it! :'( doesnt even power up :'( :'(

This is why I won't do it myself. During the EB13 update I considered using the samsung windows installer. When I talked to my sprint store, I was told if I updated using the methods provided by samsung they wouldn't touch my phone if it messed up, I would have to send it to samsung. Sprint is only responsible if their OTA screws up the phone.

Therefore an ota is what I wait for.

Relax...

Pull your battery out.

Connect your usb cable to phone and computer.

Boot into download mode

Run Odin again.

When its done and you get a "pass" just pull the cord and replace the battery.

I followed the instructions from xda forum and i have been running the update all evening. runs faster. the sprint id is a option. you can select a sprint id or select the samsung one.

Download the update from google server here.

Rename the file to ?update.zip?

Move the file to the root of your SD card on the Epic 4G

Shutdown your Epic 4G

Boot your phone into Recovery Mode
(Push and hold the the Volume Down Button, the Camera Button, and the Power Button altogether until recovery mode displays.)

Use Volume Down button to highlight ?apply sdcard:update.zip?.

Press the ?Home? soft key to select.
