Found out via essential, that the builds have to be approved by sprint. Which is annoying as all hell. There is a work around according to them. Simply pull out your sprint sim and insert a different carrier sim. Update the build and put your sprint sim back in.

I have a feeling that it needs to be an active sim, I have tried with an old sim card and it has not worked yet. It may be due to my device hasn't been flagged for the update yet and it might work tomorrow.

If anyone else could try this and confirm that it does work that would be awesome. I will keep trying myself, I am going to borrow my friends sim card later and try.

****, everyone in my family is on Sprint.

The 81C update should help. It might be worth buying an empty, unactivated SIM from T-Mobile or AT&T just to use for updates.

I tried an activated t mobile sim and no update. Tried an unactivated one, still no update...

Did you try rebooting with the TMO SIMs installed? Just switching SIMs while the phone is online might not work.

Bummer. That trick has worked forever on carrier phones. But, I've never had Sprint to know if they're doing something different or if Sprint/Essential has a deal worked out where Essential pushes the OTA to specific IMEI numbers after Sprint approves. If it's IMEI restricted then any PH-1 purchased through Sprint would be delayed even if the owner is on another carrier.

Not sure what the correct answer is but I suspect it's the latter.

If Essential is suggesting using another carrier's SIM then clearly the delay is tied to Sprint. The question remains why Sprint is behind on approving 81C.

My original questions above haven't been answered. I doubt Sprint is controlling OTAs and is telling Essential when they're allowed to send said OTAs. The question is if it's restricted to SIM or IMEI. I still think it's IMEI until we learn otherwise.

I don't use Sprint so the above is purely my curiosity.

one of the reasons I got the essential phone was because I thought we were going to get updates like the iPhone or the pixal phone directly from the manufacturer if I new Sprint was going to control when updates were going be realesed I would have never gotten this phone I would have gone with the pixal

Welcome to AC (even though you registered long ago).

Did you buy from Sprint or direct from Essential?

Even if you got the phone from essential unlocked. Once you activate the phone on Sprint. You will be lock to Sprint network and updates. That's the problem I have right now

OTA is available! I had the mash the Check for Updates button a few times, but I got it!

Edit: All done! (Screen grab)

I had the Essential on the 81C build and didn't find it that great. Still felt buggy to me.

What bugs, did you do a reset after the update to try and trouble shoot and fix the problems. I have no bugs with this, my device is noticably quicker. Haven't had time to mess with camera, I could careless about a phone camera.
