I've searched all over for a solution for this and can't seem to find it. Rooted phone running Drew's CM7 rom. I have been trying to get the sprint visual voicemail app working properly for several days. I've followed the instructions in this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982966 and have the app installed, It receives voicemails and seems to work perfectly except for when it comes to playing the received voicemails. When you click on a voicemail to listen you get an error message that says "unable to play message"

I've tried removing and reinstalling the voicemail app, rebooting the phone, even installing a newer version of the voicemail app from another forum that I can't seem to find at the moment, all with the same result. I've also tried resending activation messages to activate@vvm.sprint.com and do get a provisioning successful message back.Other threads I've found with this issue end with people saying to use google voice instead, but I'd rather stick with using sprints vvm, as I use google voice already for another line and don't want them merged.

I thought maybe it could be a missing codec to actually play the file but can't find any info on this possibility. I could try testing this if i could find where sprint vvm stores the voicemail files and try playing one maybe, though I'm not sure if it just streams the voicemail message from them or how that works.

Any thoughts/ideas on what I can try to do next? I would really like to get this working on my optimus, as it's the only thing not functioning perfectly since rooting.

Google Voice. Don't have to merge. Link in my signature.

"unable to play message"

I had been getting this message and I did spend many many hours to get it working but with no luck. I finally ended up using google voice only for the voicemail.

If the lack of visual voicemail is a dealbreaker, then use reborn rom where it works.

The Google Voice widget can be placed on your homescreen and displays the message in text format.

I'm really glad you raised this issue as I spent many cumulative hours trying to get this to work with no success. I also was on Drew's CM7 but decided that the incompatibility seems to be with Gingerbread more than with CM7.

I use SVV to communicate with my wife so this was essential and no matter how badly I wanted to keep running CM7 this was a deal-breaker for me. I am now on RebornROM and am pretty pleased as SVV is working again (I do use GV for voicemail, but you can't do voice SMS without SVV). I do miss some of the features like better text selection and tweakability from Drew's CM7, but until there's a solution that gets SVV working for voice SMS, I can't go back. Even the 9016 texts wouldn't have bothered me (Reborn uses MMS 2.2 so I seems to handle these without issue).

So my advice is to pick the best froyo ROM you can find and it should work with that. And let me know if you hear anything! I posted about this in the Drew's CM7 thread but nobody seems to know or be interested. I'd love to just know where to watch for progress on this and would be happy to descrbie my experience with it (voice SMS from and to myself play fine). Good luck!

I've seen your tutorial and messed with the idea but it doesn't work the way i'd like it to. If i use google voicemail for my phone it takes over my current google voice setup. Currently google voice is used as a business line, it rings several phones, has it's own voicemail, etc, even rings my current cell phone. I don't want to use this google voice account for my cell phone, but also still want this business number to ring my cell phone, and since you can't have your number attached to multiple google voice account i can't see a way to keep separate voicemail accounts and two separate Google voice programs on my phone for both things. everything was fine prior to rooting just using the sprint vvm app, and i'd like to make that work again. As i said it works except for the app saying unable to play message. If you have any thought on this problem please chime in!

Im with you guys...this was my first phone with vvm and i really liked it. and dont really like google voice...enough of my life is run threw google. sprint should have my voicemail since i like it better :-)

...but i cant get the app to connect to the server. im pretty sure mine is the froyo vvm app tho. probably need a gingerbread vvm. i installed the apk and ran the Ti BackUp restore...not as functional as you guys got it. although, if the rumors are true that the new optimi are shipping with 2.3 then id imagine it wouldnt be too far fetched to expect it soon. just need to keep interest alive...

It's nice to see I'm not the only one that's spent many hours pulling my hair out over this issue. Just with I could understand what the unable to play error really meant. like if its trying to connect to sprint to stream the audio file, or if it's trying to play it locally and having an error, or what the deal is. I guess i'll be trying reborn rom and trying to get that so I'm happy with it. Thanks for the input!

Sprint vvm probably only works on a lg/sprint based rom rather than cm7

I just installed Drews CM7 on my wife's Optimism last night and followed the instructions at the link below. Used the apk and data restore, installed super private to block the 9016 texts, and all works as it should....

It's a hit or miss thing. I tried all the methods for CM7. Used to work in aosp's rom but couldn't get it working with drew's or ath3nos' no matter how much I tried.

I'm envious of kbrabble. Not sure if I can stomach revisiting this until something changes.

If it's helpful, I'm pretty sure that the app is actually downloading the file. The reason why I think so is because it shows up as the correct number of seconds for each message, and if you look at the data associated with the app, it keeps getting bigger as more voicemails come in. Nevertheless, I always got the dreaded can't play this message.

Use goggle voice with CM7. Sprint Voicemail only works with Froyo based roms.

I don't have google voice, I have to make up a new number to use it? I dont want to make up a new phone number?

As a matter of fact, I do not want visual voicemail at all! I just want to use good old normal voicemail, can I do that???

If you choose to integrate your sprint number with GV, all calls go over Google servers, however you dont have to use the GV app to text or make calls. You can make calls as you normally would. It is not that noticeable a change, however every once in a while ringing is delayed or I miss a call completely. It is difficult to compare because much will change with individual circumstances.

I was confused at first but it is pretty easy with some reading. I wouldn't recommended using the app for calls or texting! Sometimes the g voice acts a little weird in handling those task.
